What on Earth? # 74: City of Sand This huge, precisely planned and executed complex of structures (pay no attention to the dark, rectangular farm) has been under construction for nearly four decades.
1. What is it for?
2. Where is it, and what's its name?
3. Who's building it?

Nuh-uh! I'm gonna!
That actually looks suspiciously like a solar farm to me. It's probably not, but that's all I have.
I'm starting to suspect that you're trying to kill me with these challenges. To quote my father from an "essay" he wrote his senior year in high school, in regards to a classmate's impropriety toward him, "That boy temp me!" |

1. This is a work of "earth art",
2. in Lincoln County, Nevada, called "City"
3. It is being constructed by the artist Michael Heizer
Further information from the wiki article:
City attempts to synthesize ancient monuments, Minimalism and industrial technology. The work derives inspiration from Mississippian mounds, Mesoamerican ball courts and Pre-Columbian sites like La Venta as well as Modernism. Heizer also cites an interest in the ceremonial squares and associated civic monuments of cites. |

That's amazing. I considered the idea of it being an art installation but discarded the notion because of the size. I'm familiar with Heizer's Charmstone, as I visit the Menil here in Houston several times a year.
And of course, in Google Earth it's obvious that the farm is a normal farm, and the "black" fields are green. |

I love this quote by Heizer:
"As long as you're going to make a sculpture, why not make one that competes with a 747, or the Empire State Building, or the Golden Gate Bridge." |

| No, it looks peculiar now, but before I hyped up the contrast, that farm looked like green fields. Really, nothing there is any kind of hint that I'm aware of. Don't get all tempted.

That's a great quote. The husband of one of my wife's co-workers works at the Menil book store, so I'll have to go by there and grab whatever large, over priced book they have on Heizer. |
