What on Earth? # 75: Massacre Site

A party of emigrants traveling in wagons was attacked and massacred on this site in the mid-1800's. Over a hundred men, women, and children were slaughtered without mercy, and more than a dozen children were kidnapped also.

1. What was the motive for the massacre?

2. Where did it happen?

3. Who did it?

1. Wikipedia suggests that the motive is still a subject of debate among historians. Edited to say that "it was a cover-up" is probably what you're looking for.

2. Mountain Meadows, Utah Territory.

3. Mormons and some Paiute tribesmen.

Edited to add: woot! 12 minutes, 50 seconds. A new record!

Three points, Dave W., for getting all the answers as right as anyone knows how.

Yeah, "coverup" is as good a motive as is known. The Mormon Nauvoo Legion tried to hang back and make their (somewhat reluctant) Paiute allies take the blame for the attack. But the Saints were spotted by the emigrants. To keep the secret of Mormon involvement, they slaughtered all except the few kids they kidnapped and parceled out to Mormon families.

The people in the wagon train were basically innocent, simply a party of Arkansans moving to California, passing well south of the major Mormon settlements in Utah Territory. But the Mormons had a grudge against Arkansans in general stemming from earlier conflicts back in in that state.
The standings:

  2. steinhenge, 11 points
  3. bngbuck, 7 points
  4. Hawks, 5.5 points
  5. Dave W., 5 points
  6. lorddix, 4 points
  7. Randy, 3 points
  8. sailinsoul, 3 points
  9. Simon, 2 points
(Ties are listed in alphabetical order.)
