Hi, I requested to use a particular avatar, but my browser reports that the image is broken. I'd like to use the following avatar, thanks.

Ah, there are only a zillion avatars waiting for approval. I'll get to them after Festivus is over. Sorry for the delay, folks.

I think I submitted multiple avatars because I assumed it was automatic and wasn't taking effect. I finally noticed that there was an approval process. Sorry for the extra work. Thankies!

I'll say! It looks like ThorGoLucky's avatar is about to eat it.

Shoot. Sorry. I keep forgetting.

I know I shouldn't be letting real life get in the way of my forum duties.

Every avatar I see shows as a broken link graphic. No pictures at all.

I think I understand this "posting" thing

Have you checked the Q & A section? I'm sure I've written about it there. Hang on, I'll see if I can get a link.

Edited to continue:

Ok found it. After filtering out fluff there's this:

The part of the Forum software that controls/displays avatars is checking your browser for the latest visited website, before sending the image. It's a security-check against other sites leaching our avatars (increase out traffic).

A number of firewalls (in my case Norton Internet Security) and/or browsers have security-settings that disables the web-browser from disclosing information about from which other site you were browsing before loading this actual page (or image).

For example, in our logs, we can see than some people clicked on a link at the Google page to get to Skeptic Friends Network. If someone is browsing another forum which tries to use our avatars, our server will see that it's the other forum's web-page which wanted to load the pic.

Our forum double-checks that it is always a SFN-page loading before sending an avatar image (since it's on our server). If your browser has this "I came from here"-function turned off, or firewall is filtering this info, then the image is denied.

I hope you understood my rambling. Otherwise, I'll give it another try.

Edited to say that interestingly, those don't work. I'll have to look into this later tonight.
