A cornucopia of Republican dishonesty and stupidity bundled into one place. Someday this is going to be very funny to history students, but not so much at the moment.
collection of quotes from Republican members of the 111th Congress weighing in on the important issues of the day: how health care reform will kill you; the nation's descent into socialism, Nazism (or both); and why caribou like to mate next to oil pipelines:
Health Care Scaremongering
"Last week Democrats released a health care bill which essentially said to America's seniors: Drop dead." —Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-Fla.)
"One in five people have to die because they went to socialized medicine!…I would hate to think that among five women, one of 'em is gonna die because we go to socialized care." —Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas)
The Republicans' health care plan "is pro-life because it will not put seniors in a position of being put to death by their government." —Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.)
|
And so forth.
These people are either insane, drunk, or have a bitterly antisocial agenda -- possibly/probably some combination of all three with a little dyslexia thrown in for the balance. I'd like to be able to call this the Bush legacy, but it is not. Bush was merely it's product and it's tool.

"What luck for rulers that men do not think." -- Adolf Hitler (1889 - 1945)
"If only we could impeach on the basis of criminal stupidity, 90% of the Rethuglicans and half of the Democrats would be thrown out of office." ~~ P.Z. Myres
"The default position of human nature is to punch the other guy in the face and take his stuff." ~~ Dude

I don't get this idea that it will become socialized medicine. Wasn't the original plan to simply socialize the insurance system like we have done up here in Canada? I don't recall any attempt to make doctors government employees. |

Various politicians on the right throw out the "socialist" bugbear because they know that it will frighten their witless constituents into thinking that Democrats want to turn the US into the USSR.
True story: during the 2008 Presidential elections, the main newspaper from my home state, the Oklahoman, often ran letters decrying Obama's "socialist" agenda, etc. At one point, I got in an email discussion with one of these letter-writers trying to point out that by no reasonable definition could one consider Obama or his proposals to be socialist. The person actually agreed with my definition of socialism, and also agreed that Obama's proposals were in no way socialist. And yet, he maintained that Obama was a socialist. It didn't matter that he wasn't a socialist. He was still a socialist. And that's how some not insignificant section of the American population thinks. And why you see genuine elected leaders calling any sort of healthcare reform as "socialist" even when it's not. |

"It's cruel and inhuman to ask the Canadians to give up on their access to good health care here in the United States of America…Let me conclude by simply saying that this Obamacare is cruel and inhuman to Canadians." —Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) |

I've never understood why they are afraid of limits and being denied healthcare with "socialised" healthcare, but when that happens much, much more often in their current system, it's fine. Seriously? The former is designed to include more people and usually everyone, while the latter is designed to exclude lots of people. |

What make this so sick is, these are words not spoken in a private moment or when the speaker was unaware a mike was on but are public comments for all those with ears who drink their dogma cool aid daily. Some listeners help stir the cool aid. There numbers are many. SS |

Republican hypocrisy is astounding. My office mate is a Faux News celebrity entertainer Beck fan and can rail against inefficient government and socialism, but he changes his tune when it comes to our socialized military. Somehow the military is a magical efficient non-socialized institution in his Conservative mind. Never mind that it eats up almost half of the federal budget, more than all other military budgets in the world combined!

SS......
Some listeners help stir the cool aid. There numbers are many. SS | Yes, far too many. The polls are indicating that this fall there may well be a majority of mindless Zombies in the electorate who think they will be voting against Socialism, "Death Panels", bankruptcy of the United States, godless liberals conspiring against marriage, religion and free enterprise, and on and on.
When will Obama and Company find voice to counter these Republican lies, reverse the present trend towards Conservative politics, and save the Congress from a Republican takeover in November?
Obama is a gifted orator. He desperately needs to use his talents and the bully pulpit to address the American people strongly and frequently -- in direct rebuke to the Radical Right's rhetoric.
Confront Cheney's lies one on one. Call out the Limbaughs and Becks, the Hannitys and O'Reillys, the whole Fox news political propaganda campaign. Give the electorate a clear picture of the progress that has been made in cleaning up the catastrophic cesspool left by Cheney/Bush! Call out the lies, name the liars, and challenge the utter irrationality of the reflexively wrong Rightwingnuts!
Rove and Gingrich have energized the lunatic wing of the Republican Party into a cacaphony of criticism that is beginning to affect middle of the road Independent voters. The polls show it. It's time the Democrats returned fire -- big time! |

bngbuck, I mostly agree. I find it frustrating that the outright nonsense isn't dealt with head on, but then again it gives the nonsense some legitimacy if a sitting president does so, eh?
