Heckuva job.

Director of the National Counterterrorism Center Michael Leiter didn't cut short a ski trip until several days after alleged Nigerian attempted bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab tried to destroy a commercial jetliner en route to Detroit Christmas day, veteran New York Daily News intelligence correspondent James Meek reports Thursday.

Citing two intelligence officials grousing about Leiter's continued vacation, Meek says the top counterterror boss declined to cut short his snow-struck holiday.

"People have been grumbling that he didn't let a little terrorism interrupt his vacation," one of the sources purportedly told Meek.

The guy's a Bush hold-over, so why am I not surprised?

If the agency is so tightly micro-managed that it won't run properly when the boss is out of town, then the boss and/or the entire organization needs to be replaced.

If the agency is working as it should (no single person should be irreplaceable) then someone else lower on the ladder steps in and makes sure everything runs smoothly, if the boss needs some time to recharge his batteries. Flexibility in the command structure and all that... As long as things get done.

My military background tells me that when the boss is out of town and an emergency comes up, he needs to get back to town ASAP. Or at least quit skiing and get an efficient line of communication set up.

After all, if the unthinkable happens, it's his neck on the line and rightfully so. The responsibility is all his. I think that Mr. Leiter was derelict of his duty and lucked out.

When something that scares the whole nation comes along, you not only need leaders to be serious, in the loop and ready to act, you need the populace to see and know they are. Leiter seriously screwed up by not showing he was in charge of his turf.

That is a good point. But will it do any good? The people who counts (the loudmouths who are a minority but is given a voice just because they are loud) who distrust the government don't think the government can do any good anyway, will still mistrust the management...

Bah, what do I know anyway.
In Sweden there was some political fall-out after the huge tsunami a few winters back. But that was because mismanagement and not only because the bosses weren't at their posts for a few days.
