Bob Herbert eulogizes.
Mr. Zinn was often taken to task for peeling back the rosy veneer of much of American history to reveal sordid realities that had remained hidden for too long. When writing about Andrew Jackson in his most famous book, “A People’s History of the United States,” published in 1980, Mr. Zinn said:
“If you look through high school textbooks and elementary school textbooks in American history, you will find Jackson the frontiersman, soldier, democrat, man of the people — not Jackson the slaveholder, land speculator, executioner of dissident soldiers, exterminator of Indians.”

| That seems to sum up Zimm. He added the kind of events which are only rarely mentioned in histories, the history of poor oppressed and rich oppressors, and which are almost universally kept out of public school textbooks. |

Andrew "Trail of Tears" Jackson creeps me out. I hope his portrait gets replaced on the US$20 bill before too long.

All I can really add is that so far I side completely with HalfMooner.
I do not think there is ALWAYS a BETTER alternative than war. Sometimes you have to FIGHT for what's right. And let's not get into semantics about how, what, or who decides what's right. Hitler was wrong and had to be stopped....period. Hell, his own officers tried to kill him. Slavery is wrong and the South was not going to stop it without blood being spilled....period. (IMHO). |
I would rather face a cold reality than delude myself with comforting fantasies.

I don't know about always either. But was the cause of the civil war slavery? Did the U.S. get into WWII because they were against Hitler's murderous activities? |

We could probably argue till the end of the earth (2012) and still not agree on ALL of the possible causes. Me, I'm sticking with slavery (and secession which was being pushed primarily due to slavery) and Hitler's murderous activities yes.
Regardless if those where the actual primary reasons or not they were still both things that needed to change immediately and using military force appeared to be the only realistic route. (Again...IMHO) |
