I think that Stupidity should a Nobel Prize catagory. Or maybe not; too many winners might show up to collect sans trousers.

Why is is that everyone seems to have forgotten how to spell, "morans?"

Yep, I went right to the bitter end, there's a lot of stupid in there!

Yeah, I finally finished looking at it all. I was relieved and gratified that most of the tard was rightist teabagger stuff.

I strongly agree with the concept of derogating the people that carry such appallingly ignorant and potentially dangerous (incitement to violence) signs!

However, we (strongly including myself) need to be aware of possible hypocrisy with regards to correct spelling and the use of homonyms and homophones. Many come and go in these very forums whose abuse of the language is noticeable.

I understand that much of this is typographical due to keyboard impatience, lack of a spell checker, etc. And many post here whose native tongue is not English; their mistakes are completely understandable.

But when I see "there" used instead of "their" (as a possessive); "affect" used for "effect"; "loose" used for "lose"; "its"(possessive) used for "it's" (contraction of "it is"); "loath" for "loathe"; confusion concerning "to", "too" and even "two" -- and many more -- I chafe.

Not to the extent that "moran" comes to mind, because usually the content of the post makes sense. But something of any post's effect is lost when the words are misspelled or the grammar is incorrect.

I am in no way free of an occassional (sic)-{corrected to occasional}- error myself. But I do make a considerable effort to not misspell by actually looking up every word that looks wrong to me when I proof my copy; and if I am unsure of a word's meaning, I do the same before posting it.

I can't help thinking that when I make an error in English usage, it is due to ignorance alone. I should know better! I would appreciate any reader here calling errors of mine to my attention. I will never resent such comment. It's the best way to learn, because it stings!

There are remedies for the odd typographicals.
Firefox has spelling add-ons. I don't have Firefox here at work, but searching for spelling add-on shouldn't be difficult. I use one for English (American, sadly) and one for Swedish.

For Microsoft Internet Explorer users, there is IEspell http://www.iespell.com/ which is an Internet Explorer plug-in I use. It has a nicer interface for the spell checker, and the options to look up a word in the dictionary/thesaurus before selecting suggestion. A lot like Microsoft Word.

Sadly, I don't know of any similar grammar-correction plug-ins. Though I agree they are sorely needed.

Dr. Mabuse.....

Thanks for the suggestions for automated assistance in spelling and word selection. For very young (under 30) posters and those to whom English is a second language, digital literacy software should offer considerable help in constructing acceptable text.

Many well educated and well spoken writers complain publically from time to time to the effect that "I just can't spell". The fact that most of these folks are well-spoken indicates that they have reasonable facility in choosing appropriate words. But their experience fails them for some reason when the time comes to properly spell the words they have chosen.

My personal belief is that these folks are either lazy writers (type away at a frantic pace, and to hell with the spelling and syntax details) - or else they have had much more experience in listening to and speaking words, than they have had in reading and writing words.

The above former class of lazy writers simply need more discipline and motivation not to be sloppy spellers. It certainly should not be a point of pride to announce "I am a rotten speller"; any more than to loudly position oneself as an incompetent thinker as a prelude to publically expressing an opinion (SFN being essentially a forum of opinion).

Those aspiring scribes that have not had enough experience in expressing their thoughts and opinions in the written word simply need more practice and more motivation to spell properly. The use of an effective spell-checker and a Merriam-Webster toolbar is very helpful; but most of all, one should be concerned about correctly spelling every word one writes.

I am certain that most literate readers conciously dismiss some of the persuasive power of any argument that is peppered with misspellings.

A great deal of the above commentary also applies to the process of word-choice. Personally, I feel that any posting is improved by use of a printed or on-line thesaurus. Again, this requires both motivation and effort, and is somewhat time-consuming. However, any text is burnished by the use of carefully chosen nouns, adjectives, adverbs, metaphors and consistent logical sentence construction.

Below is a list of the words whose spelling, meaning, or both I checked before typing them in the above post.

Every version of Firefox I've downloaded has had on-the-fly English spell-checking enabled by default, no need to search for anything extra.

In a way, the point is moot. You can write perfectly with all grammar and punctuation correct and your speling immaculate, and nobody's going to notice because your screeds are so easy to read. But if you don't write in such a manner, the grammar nazis will hang you up by your figurative balls and beat you with to death with red herrings.

I was once a grammar nazi. A while back, I gave it up for Lent and discovered that I was happier not worrying about it. After all, if an author writes like an idiot, he likely is one and doesn't need to be reminded of it. He & everyone already know.

Have you Brits no sense of shame?

After all, you guys invented the damn language with all of its double entendrés and impossible multiple meanings. And I have no doubt that the very first terrible pun was dreamed up by a Cymry, whilst running for his red coat.

Making typos when downloading thoughts from brain to ether via fingers & keyboards, quickly, - meh, so what??

But making errors like those shown (a selected sample, to be sure) - when one is handwriting just a few supposedly carefully-chosen words in a supposedly pithy phrase onto a sign which one intends to carry, wave, & use to demonstrate one's thoughts for a few hours - that's a different deal. That's worth doing more carefully than some of these folks have done; the medium & method are part of the message.

For these reasons, the "Homescholers" one is priceless - "by their fruits ye shall know them" or at least the efficacy of their educational approaches!

Personally, I love the Teabaggers most when they have obviously insane eyes, and hold up incoherent signs that make no sense at all. "Not even wrong," as Wolfgang Pauli once said in another context.
