Welp. This is news.
James Randi comes out as gay on the For Good Reason podcast hosted by D.J. Grothe for the JREF.
James Randi comes out as gay. He discusses his life as a closeted gay man, and why he is now at age 81 coming out, and why he hasn’t been publicly open about his sexuality sooner. He describes the possible impact his coming out may have on his tireless work advancing skepticism and critical thinking. He discusses his atheism, and whether it, or his sexual orientation, influences the mission of the James Randi Educational Foundation. He talks about gay rights issues such as marriage equality. He discusses his detractors and what they might make of the news of his homosexuality. And he explores the relevance of gay rights to the skeptical movement. |
Also, from today’s Swift:
How To Say It? by James Randi
… This declaration of mine was prompted just last week by seeing an excellent film — starring Sean Penn — that told the story of politician Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. I’m in excellent company: Barney Frank, Oscar Wilde, Stephen Fry, Ellen DeGeneris, Rachel Maddow, are just a few of those who were in my thoughts as I pressed the key that placed this on Swift and before the whole world… |
So there you go. I’m happy that he came out and only slightly worried about the inevitable attacks on his character.

Well, good for Randi for getting that load off his back. Otherwise, this is of trivial importance, having almost nothing to do with his remarkable life's work. |

Doesn't matter to me, but boy oh BOY, I can't wait to see the Rapture Ready/Religious right crowd go nuts.
In fact, I bet they're already on it. |

Okay, so....?
Perhaps we are beginning to approach the day when calling someone gay is not an accusation but a simple statement. I too, await the reactions from the usual suspects, many of whom, one speculates, are so far back in the closet that they've found great grandpa's evening gown.
Good for Randi! He's never been accused of being short on courage by anyone with any credibility, and I doubt he ever will be.

Well, one religious right guy has made his views known. |

I was going to say.... that was a secret?
Now that he has gone "public", nothing changes does it? He's still a brilliant man and worthy of the respect he has earned.

Hell, I didn't know. I'm not in the loop for such inside info. Not that I ever cared enough to ask anyone about a major skeptic's private affairs. The only circumstance in which I'd think sexual orientation is important would be if someone who is gay were persecuting other gays. Like some GOP pols I could mention. |

I had no clue either.....but could care less either way. |

The only sane reaction to this announcement is "meh", or something along those lines. It really is trivial.
Some of the comments in the link are really disgusting, though they do reveal the depths of stupidity these morons have sunk to.
