What's really coolest of all to me about this video isn't the folding or the sorting per se, but watching the robot carefully scan and analyze the topology of each item. (Saw this at "Effect Measure.)

A couple of apparent limitations to the robot's programming are that 1) It requires a green-screen background to see the laundry properly (posted comments make it clear this is a trivial limitation, as good background-subtraction algorithms exist but were left out in order to test other functions); and 2) The robot seems to be limited (so far) to oblong patches of cloth like towels.

Also, the 'bot takes considerably longer than a human would to size up each job. But all in all, I'm impressed as Hell to see this.

Additional fascination of an assumed background color. With 3D all the rage again nowdays, perhaps 3D could......ouch, my brain. (I'm a programmer....well I was a technical programmer a couple of decades back, but now I'm just a relational database programmer)

I'll say. That video is sped up by a factor of 50. So that two-minute video actually spans an hour and 40 minutes, or twenty minutes per towel. Even the three-second folks took over two minutes each.
But all in all, I'm impressed as Hell to see this.
Me, too.

I had no idea the video was sped up 50 times. So the 'bot is really MUCH slower at its work than I'd thought. Oh, well, Moore's Law should fix that.

That's what the "50x" in the title refers to.

Ah! I'd just assume it was the name of the robot or program.

They've got another video at 30x, of the same robot, with only one towel.

Okay, but I refuse to watch that "Two Robots, One Cup" video.

I don't mean to take this thread off topic, but....

No offense but, better you than me. I'm in IT (mostly hardware related, desktop support, server patches, workstation/printer installs, etc), and that sounds... well... BORING. Please don't take that the wrong way or get insulted. If there was a hell, mine would be to do database programming (Or listen to the Grateful Dead).

Mind you, I can barely program HTML, and the database course(s) in school were agony. I don't mean to demean your specialty, just putting in my first impression when I read that. Most non-IT people think that IT people can do it ALL (program, database, network engineering, etc). I tell people that I can't even spell SQL.

With your permission, I may PM you with a db question, because occasionally, I am curious as to how something's working, i.e. one db translating info from another db.

Back on topic....

I understand completely. Robot porn in general is just too mechanical for my tastes. It's just 1010101010101010... Booooring.

And the one cup? Who did they think they were kidding? That was clearly a Windows Recycle Bin. Way too tame, if the intent was to mimic the biological version. I bet there wasn't even a single virus in it. Probably just old marketing Power Point slides.

Fripp, actually relational database programming is only a fraction of what I do. I also do networking, sys admin (Windows and Linux), web programming (HTML, ASP, PHP), user support, building servers & workstations, and being a liaison between the OSU Bookstore and our software and hardware vendors. It's a one-man shop so I'm busy and always on call. Feel free to PM questions, or post in general discussion because there might be other programmers here too.

With the exception of programming, your job sounds exactly like mine. I, as well, am a one-man dept, which I love: I'm constantly busy, frequently challenged intellectually, and independent. My interaction with other people is minimal, which I prefer. We're all Windows here, but I use Ubuntu Linux at home.

Actually, biology is quite nicely messy. And human sex is just a somewhat less furry than other mammals'.
