Because the shitheads are coming.
Frustrated by recent political setbacks, tea party leaders and some conservative members of the Oklahoma Legislature say they would like to create a new volunteer militia to help defend against what they believe are improper federal infringements on state sovereignty.
Tea party movement leaders say they've discussed the idea with several supportive lawmakers and hope to get legislation next year to recognize a new volunteer force. They say the unit would not resemble militia groups that have been raided for allegedly plotting attacks on law enforcement officers.
"Is it scary? It sure is," said tea party leader Al Gerhart of Oklahoma City, who heads an umbrella group of tea party factions called the Oklahoma Constitutional Alliance. "But when do the states stop rolling over for the federal government?"
Thus far, the discussions have been exploratory. Even the proponents say they don't know how an armed force would be organized nor how a state-based militia could block federal mandates. Critics also asserted that the force could inflame extremism, and that the National Guard already provides for the state's military needs.

Well, this is Oklahoma, after all. The teabaggers drag their knuckles deep in OK.
So ok, what if this nonsense -- armed idiots with legal sanction galumphing about the state -- comes to pass? Might other states seeing it decide it's just a splendid idea and follow suit?
What chain of command would be set up for said, armed idiots? And who assumes responsibility for the armed idiots' actions? What training would the armed idiots have and who does that training? To repeat a most interesting question; how exactly would the armed idiots block a federal mandate short of insurrection?
And so forth.
This is such a stupid idea that you've gotta love it!

A friend of mine from Oklahoma refers to them as the "T-Klux Klan Bag Party".

They really haven't though this through at all.
Do they use their own arms, or will the state issue them some to ensure ammo interchangeability and compatibility?
Do they get paid and if so, by whom?
What base facilities would they have, and where, and who pays for that?
This ain't gonna fly. Even OK politicians will wake/sober up sometime and realize the potential expense and opportunity for disaster it would create. Can you imagine the lawsuits that would result if a handful of these yobs shot up, say, a local Democratic Party meeting?
The mind boggles.

Yeah, I'm more worried about terror or assassination attempts coming from small groups of unstable people who are in such groups than about credible rebellions. If there were a rising of militia in rebellion, they'd probably all be arrested/wiped out on the way to their "missions."
I really suspect that the militias are thoroughly infiltrated by Federal agents, so even successful bombings or assassinations should not be widespread. Still, a handful of militia types will probably be overlooked and carry off violence from time to time. |

Eh, these are just deluded, aging children wanting an excuse to play guns and be John Wayne at the Alamo, falling in glorious defeat to the evil, colored hordes.
Evidently, their big whine, other than the black guy in the White House, is health care reform. So I must ask: Being as how paramilitary putzs are no less likely to get hurt than regular service personell, who picks up that tab? Especially if/when your insurance company dumps your injured ass. "Socialized medicine" might start to look pretty good.
