Reality check for those who think crime is high/rising in AZ border towns, or in the state itself. Turns out those claims of extra crime are just lies. Lies told by racist politicians who are stirring up their racist constituents for the fall election.

Lies, damned lies and AZ politicians.
Jan Brewer has lost her head.

The Arizona governor, seemingly determined to repel every last tourist dollar from her pariah state, has sounded a new alarm about border violence. "Our law enforcement agencies have found bodies in the desert either buried or just lying out there that have been beheaded," she announced on local television.

Ay, caramba! Those dark-skinned foreigners are now severing the heads of fair-haired Americans? Maybe they're also scalping them or shrinking them or putting them on a spike.

But those in fear of losing parts north of the neckline can relax. There's not a follicle of evidence to support Brewer's claim.

The Arizona Guardian Web site checked with medical examiners in Arizona's border counties, and the coroners said they had never seen an immigration-related beheading. I called and e-mailed Brewer's press office requesting documentation of decapitation; no reply.

Brewer's mindlessness about headlessness is just one of the immigration falsehoods being spread by Arizona politicians. Border violence on the rise? Phoenix becoming the world's No. 2 kidnapping capital? Illegal immigrants responsible for most police killings? The majority of those crossing the border are drug mules? All wrong.

This matters, because it means the entire premise of the Arizona immigration law is a fallacy. Arizona officials say they've had to step in because federal officials aren't doing enough to stem increasing border violence. The scary claims of violence, in turn, explain why the American public supports the Arizona crackdown.

Last year gave us death panels and granny killings, but compared with the nonsense justifying the immigration crackdown, the health-care debate was an evening at the Oxford Union Society.
Read on, it gets worse -- or better depending upon your point of view.

I really don't understand what all this is in aid of. If it is to gain some sort of political advantage, they're going about it the wrong way. Brewer and the flake, McCain, et al., should be bragging about the lack of immigrant violence happening in the state and claiming that existing policies are working, and promising to make them work even better. As it is, they are behaving little better than the teabaggers and the Westboro Baptist Church..... Oh, right. They're doing latter-day, Republican SOP and trying to play the Fear Card: get everybody scared witless and win elections. I wonder if it will work this time...

The Obama administration is doing something about illegal immigrants, and it's both effective and cost efficient.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/07/10/us/10enforce.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1

ICE is now actually enforcing the documentation law, auditing businesses for compliance, and making them fire everyone with fake documents or face fines for non-compliance. No big raids, no mass deportations, no breaking up families, no big expenses. Instead of hundreds of agents planning and staging one big raid they have hundreds of agents audit thousands of businesses each week.

The goal of this is to enforce the law and get businesses accustomed to complying with the documentation provisions, thereby eliminating most of the demand for illegal workers. People who sneak into the US in order to get jobs that pay better than the ones at home will lose their incentive.

Farms are being hit hardest by this as they can't find replacements for undocumented workers they have to fire. That's a short term problem. They're already starting to work with immigration authorities to get thousands of farm workers in on temporary visas to do the work. All nice and legal.

No big fence and extensive border patrols to keep out the illegals. Just eliminate the demand and the supply goes away. More opportunity for short term workers to get legal visas to work on the farms and travel from/to their home country by bus instead of by smuggler. No incentive for them to overstay their visa because they won't be able to get a job when it expires. Plenty of incentive for them to travel back and forth seasonally, getting a new visa for each year's work at a much lower cost to them than smugglers charge.

Did y'all know that a large percentage (I can't find the numbers at the moment) of the New England apple harvesting is done by Jamaicans? Some of them have been working the harvest for a decade or more. Regular job for them - fly up at the end of the summer, work from can see until can't see for a couple months, maybe off to the northwest to work their later harvest, then home before Christmas with a nice fat paycheck (taxes paid). All fully documented and legal.

Because you can get a real, non-fake, non-forged drivers license and social security card with nothing more than an easily forged birth certificate. Hell, you can even get a legit birth certificate in the mail. All you have to do is fill out a request form for any city hall (mostly available online now), pay a small fee, and they will print up, seal, and notarize an official birth certificate from anyone they have on file and mail it out to you.

Dude, you've got too many what-if's going on in your argument.
The percentage people actually taking the time and energy to do that would be small.
Sounds like youv'e got the system down pat though.

You are completely wrong. A guy I went to school with, and still know quite well, does this shit for people for a fee. You have $200? Guess what, you can have a "real" birth certificate with detailed instructions (in Spanish and a couple other languages) of how to turn that into a SSN/card and a real driver's license. Contractors here locally (the ones who grab guys from home depot in the morning for cash day labor) send their good regular workers to this guy.

Yep Dude, I was being naive. Just happened to see a news segment last night showing how easy it is and how common it is for illegals to get false identification.
Shit, I don't know what to do now.
