Anyone not stranded on a desert island has, by now, heard about the new Arizona immigration madness. So has Jon Stewart, who, at last report is not stranded anywhere.
Jon Stewart slammed Arizona Monday for passing a new law that would require citizens to carry proof of residency papers -- a measure he likened to slavery-era laws requiring African Americans to show their papers to prove that they were free.

"It's the same thing free black people had to do in 1863," Stewart remarked. "Lord knows that didn't leave any residual anger."

He deemed the arid Grand Canyon State the "meth lab of democracy."

Stewart pointed out even former Republican congressman Tom Tancredo, "the man Mexican parents tell their kids about to get them to eat their vegetables, thought it was going too far. Arizona, that's gotta tell you something. It would be like Ted Nugent pleading with you to put down the guns and talk this thing out."

This video is from Comedy Central's The Daily Show, broadcast April 26,

Did you ever see any of the old flicks concerning Nazi Europe? Sure you have. Did you ever see one where jack-booted thugs in uniform failed to snarl the timeless words, "Let me see your papers!" Of course not.

My advice to anyone a shade or two darker than an albino is to avoid Arizona. In fact, the albinos might do well to take heed and do the same. The opportunities for abuse are boundless. Of course, Sheriff Joe just loves it. He's the toughest scumbag law enforcement has.

Well, yes and no. We're on the same page, but different paragraphs.

The Rude Pundit:

What Arizona Has to Say About Its Own Law:
While we all have our collective panties in a justifiable wad over Arizona cops being allowed to stop anyone to ask for proof of legal residence (or citizenship), let's see what the newspapers around the state have to say:

"That doesn't mean the legislation necessarily is good but it does mean people think it's the best we can do in the face of the federal government's refusal under presidential administrations of both parties over more than 50 years to do anything because a steadily worsening status quo serves narrow political agendas." - The Prescott Daily Courier, in an editorial that doesn't endorse the law, after citing a poll showing 70% of Arizonans favor the new law.

"Unfortunately, those who support the Arizona immigration law - who have justified it by claiming the federal government has failed in its immigration responsibilities - are likely to see this as continued failure. They seem to want only one approach - enforcement and punishment." - The Yuma Sun, referring to efforts by the Obama administration to push for immigration reform, in an editorial condemning the law.

It's already coming apart, predictably...
At least one Arizona sheriff is disagrees with a new Arizona immigration law that critics say could lead to civil rights violations. Sheriff Clarence Dupnik is promising not to enforce the law that he calls "just racist" and "stupid."

The law directs enforcement to use a "reasonable suspicion" standard to decide which persons need to be stopped. People without documentation proving they are legal residents can be imprisoned for up to six months. Governor Jan Brewer sign the legislation into law Friday.

Dupnik is becoming one of the most vocal opponents of the law. The Pima County Sheriff told KGUN that the legislation was "disgusting" and "unnecessary."

"I think the law, as I have said is unwise. It's stupid and racist," said Dupnik.

Prior to the new legislation, law enforcement had "the authority to stop and detain people who they believe are illegal immigrants and turn them over to the border patrol," Dupnik said on MSNBC Wednesday. "We have been doing that for -- I've been a police officer here for 52 years. 30 years as sheriff. And we've been doing that for as long as I've been a cop here."

Story continues below...

It is good to know that not everyone in AZ is a closet Nazi. This thing is gonna fly like the Titanic.
