According to South Carolina senator & douchebag Jim DeMint they are. I've also read of them described as a bowel movement. Anyhow:
DeMint: Teabagging is a spiritual movement

DeMint: Teabagging is a spiritual movement Wed Apr 21, 2010 at 04:32:04 PM PDT

Jim DeMint tells CBN's David Brody that he believes the tea party movement isn't focused on "fiscal issues" -- rather, it is a "spiritual revival" akin to The Great Awakening:

Key quote:

I really think a lot of the motivation behind these Tea Party crowds is a spiritual component. I think it’s very akin to the Great Awakening before the American Revolution. A lot of our founders believed the American Revolution was won before we ever got into a fight with the British. It was a spiritual renewal. ... I've waded into a lot of these tea party crowds. I don't hear a lot about fiscal issues. I hear people saying "we're praying for you."

I dunno. They carry arms to rallies, make threats, lie constantly, and generally are a blight on the country's political landscape, yet they're spiritual? The only thing "spiritual" here is whatever DeMint was drinking before he made that asinine statement.

Sounds more like a religion when you put it like that.

DeMint's statement that fiscal restraint is somehow Biblically ordained is total, unevidenced hand-waving. It's also absurd. It's like saying Darwin favored (or opposed) genetically modified corn. It might be interesting if there were some Gospels or even verses on fiscal conservatism, but I haven't seen them. Show me chapter and verse, DeMint.

All DeMint is really doing here is grasping at straws to find words to flatter the Teabaggers. Like any sane person, I think DeMint finds the combined ferocity and incoherence of Teabaggers scary. Perhaps by trying to make the Teabaggers accept his definition of them, he fondly hopes to deflect them away from himself (a definitive Washington careerist) and toward his political opponents.

It's rather the opposite, if I don't misremember.
Jesus said to a rich person: Give away your wealth (to charity) and then come back to me...
How neo-conservative is that? Jesus was the ultimate socialist.
