While I don't agree with the Supreme Court's decision to let the cross remain this is not an acceptable response to the problem, regardless of the religious or philosophical persuasion of those who committed the theft.

The only thing I find amusing is that the reward is 25K for some junky cross which you could replace with leftover garage materials. Spend the 25k and build a proper monument...(if it must remain)

"...things I have neither seen nor experienced nor heard tell of from anybody else; things, what is more, that do not in fact exist and could not ever exist at all. So my readers must not believe a word I say." -Lucian on his book True History

"...They accept such things on faith alone, without any evidence. So if a fraudulent and cunning person who knows how to take advantage of a situation comes among them, he can make himself rich in a short time." -Lucian critical of early Christians c.166 AD From his book, De Morte Peregrini

Most likely it's Privileged Mariners from a nearby village.

During the Middle Ages, the body parts of saints attracted pilgrims from all over Christendom with their supposed abilities to perform miracles. Because few towns would willingly part with such an obvious cash cow, villages would hire gangs of thieves to steal relics from others. One of the most famous capers involved the theft of St. Nicholas, the model for Santa Claus. St. Nick's remains were said to exude myrrh, making him a particularly valuable bag of bones. In 1087, the Italian town of Bari hired men — some accounts call them pirates while others refer to them as "privileged mariners" — to steal St. Nicholas from Myra, a town in present-day Turkey. The theft of Santa's bones is still celebrated in Bari with an annual parade and fireworks.

More on the story.

BARSTOW • An anonymous caller, claiming to know the details of the theft of the Mojave Cross, contacted the Desert Dispatch newsroom at around 4 p.m. Tuesday. He said he was not directly responsible for the cross’s theft, but knew who was. He told a reporter that the person responsible for the theft wrote up the following explanation and statement regarding the removal of the cross. He asked that the Desert Dispatch to print the statement in its entirety.

The 25k isn't to get the cross back, it's to "Catch the thieves."

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.
