Here is why.

He is Immortal. He has alluded to having known Cleopatra, Julius Ceasar and Mark Twain just to name a few.

He is omnipotent. He can make anything happen.

He tries to teach his guests a life lesson through their fantasies.

He is a bit twisted. He seems to get a kick out of his guests being put in danger.

Whenever Tatoo says " Thank God" Mr. Rourke gets a grin on his face and replies " Thank God indeed!".

He lives in paradise.(Heaven?)

He has a cool little buddy to hang around with.

Chicks dig him.

Thoughts?

His character was (among other things) a rather unsubtle metaphor for divine influence, yes.

He's the man who did what every 20-year old horny male Swede wanted to do in 1987: bonk Lisa Bonet.

Not only Swedes, and not just 20 year olds, either.

I've often thought that the show's concept was excellent, but would have been much better handled by British television. American TV tends toward the schmalzy, no offense intended.

Well, I'm still unsure who the f Roarke is, but Lisa Bonet I recognize from the execrable Angel Heart, from which depressing pile of crap she clearly stood out.

Edited to add: I'd missed the original reference to Tattoo, which was a giveaway for the Fantasy Island Roarke. I'd watched a few episodes, but found it generally too simplistic and corny (or "schmaltzy," as The Rat put it). The Brits would (and did) do it rather differently, indeed: The Prisoner.
