A question, filthy... What kind of snake is that? How hot is it, in terms of biting the sqirrel?

Okay. Something really weird just happened and now I must apologies to sailingsoul. He had posted a duplicate post, which happens sometimes, and when I see them I make sure they are exactly the same and then delete one of them. But this time something went wrong. Both posts were deleted! I have no idea why or how that could happen, but it did.
He did leave a similar post at the link that Mab provided. It reads:
That snake was slow, for a reason. This is most likely out in the desert, on the road side. The sun's shadow is low, so I'd say it's early morning, before 8:30am. Being cold blooded, desert snakes are very vulnerable in the early morning light after a cold night, when they come out to warm up. At the end you can see how motionless it is. A sure sign of low body core temperature. Looks like the squirrel knows his biology. If#65279; that snake was up to temp, that squirrel wouldn't be doing that. SS |
So there you go. Now I would like to know what went wrong... |

Nope, it's evil spirits. We never should have sent those guys to the Moon, buggered up everything. |

What are the odds of that happening? Unless God or some supernatural governmental cover up conspiracy is involved. I would say I'm not worried. After I posted it, I too noticed that there was a double post so I deleted one and left. Fact 1, We both saw the double post, Fact 2, We both report trying to delete one. Seems like it was at the same time. Maybe Kil and I deleted within the same few seconds. I wouldn't worry about this single event, without further problems. That reply you found was close enough Killer!! SS

I'm not entirely certain due to the slightly fuzzy photography, but I'm betting-sure it's a Bull snake, Pituophis catenifer sp. It's a non-venomous constrictor and in fact, once the hissing & striking threat display is over with and the snake settles down, it makes a dandy "pet" snake.
They are excellent climbers, and this one seems to have had the ill luck to run afoul of a squirrel defending it's nest and young. It doesn't look to be quite large enough (they grow to 6 feet +) to swallow the squirrel or that's probably what it would be doing.
Edited to add a clear photo:

Probably. As long as no internal organs are damaged, they can survive some pretty dreadful wounds. A squirrel's jaws and teeth lack the gape and the the shape for deep penetrating-bites.
I once found a big Northern Watersnake (Neroida sipedon) with a scar that looked to be some 9 or 10 inches long.
