Dave.....

I do. Everyone has an equal opportunity to earn (or lose) my respect.
Is it of concern to you that some of those that converse with you have exactly the same attitude, as to respecting or disrespecting you; in the same manner that you respect/disrespect them?

In your opinion, is the mutual respect/disrespect relationship I refer to above germane in any way to the "tone" debate and major topic of this thread?

My question should not be taken as commentary. Curiosity, and a lurking interest in the topic of this thread, alone drive my enquiry.

I also sincerely hope that this query is seen (by all) as both civil and civilized, and not adversarial. That is not my intent.

Since I try to live by the Ethic of Reciprocity, no.

It's only slightly related, since the "tone" debate is really about the perception of a dispute, and not the dispute itself. Plus, one can have utter contempt for a person but still publicly engage with them in a pleasant "tone." And vice versa.

Thank you for your answer. It certainly broadens my perspective of the entire "tone" controversy, particularly as it applies in microcosm to both the tone and content of views expressed here on SFN.

I haven't finished it yet, because I must leave for a bit. But so far, good article.

Plus, we can probably all find ourselves in one or more of his descriptions of dickesh skeptic practices. The satire cuts with a double edged sword.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Well, Steven Novella has popped into the comments over there to explain that they weren't being dicks, after all. They were engaging in "irony."

Apparently, dickishness is in the eye of the beholder, still.

Do I see a "no true dick" fallacy in there?
