Anyone who hasn't seen this one has no television (and is probably the better off for the lack of one).

It's all about those "gold" coins that are being ruthlessly mongered by some lame "gold" coin company or other, on practically every channel. I didn't do the math, but I figured they were actually worth maybe a couple of bucks each. I was being generous; PZ did the math and it turns out that the coins are clad with something like $0.64 worth of actual gold. The word "clad" was the one that set off my bullshit detector. "Clad" simply means "plated" and requires very little material.
How innumerate are Americans, anyway?

I just saw a commercial peddling gold coins, going on and on about how the price of gold was soaring above $1300 per ounce, and showing this fancy glinting well-lit shiny gold coin and telling everyone the cost of gold meant the $50 price could only be guaranteed for 7 days. This coin is 14 karat 0.9999 pure gold clad! A little deeper in to the spiel, they mention that it contains 14 milligrams of pure gold.

Using their own numbers, by my calculation that means the $50 coin contains about 64¢ worth of gold.

Hell I'll whip up a home plating kit and sell em for 25$ a pop! Line starts to the left, no pushing!
