If this piece of shit legislation goes through personal freedoms will be severely curtailed. It will be illegal to use a pseudonym on-line, and linking to anything the government doesn't like would also be a crime. So if I wanted to inform someone of an asshole like Fred Phelps, in order to combat his hatred, I could be prosecuted. Actually Phelps is a bad example, the shitheads infesting our parliament now probably agree with the asshole.

While this does look bad, I'll point out that one time not so long ago our gov't under Harper warned Phelps that if he came up here and spread his shit, that he could get jail time.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

This "stupidity" cannot be blamed on the U.S. Our first amendment rights prevent the government from stifling our freedom of expression in this manner. To find a parallel for this sort of illiberal censorship one must look overseas. The Canadian view of the government's right to restrict or impose upon free speech is much closer to Europe's than our own.

It just sounds too ridiculous to pass. How would it be enforced? Well, er, I guess unenforceable laws are nothing new.

I'm not so sure about that. Your previous administration found many creative ways to violate individual rights, what with illegal wiretaps and Gitmo, Patriot Act, Homeland Security etc.
This one is a more blatant and overt violation, and thus a little less insidious, but the underlying factor seems to be stupidity among the politicians who lack the liberal bias inherent i reality.

Yeah, I'm not buying into this insult to the U.S.. It is baseless. Something like that would never even be attempted here.

I'm also not sure why The Rat would think it would be something the right wing would do.

That kind of law can't ever be adopted in the US unless we modify our constitution. So the idea that it is a result of anything started in the US is baseless indeed, not to mention insulting and more than a little hostile.

Mab, yes, we fucked ourselves over post 9/11. Some of that is going away though, as time lets more rational minds assert influence. But lets be clear, you can't compare a violation of our privacy to an attempt by a government to censor what you can and can't say on the internet. We all know your low opinion of the US these days, but you seriously need to do some self evaluation and bias checking before you post crap like that. You have some legitimate criticism of the US, and many of us agree with you on a lot of it, but you ruin your credibility when you say stuff like you have in this thread.

Ebone, it's rightwing because fascism and totalitarianism (stupid fucking -isms.... get ready for a couple more before the end of this paragraph too!) are the far right wing of the political spectrum. No matter how many times FAUX cartoon news network talking heads say that liberalism is the same as communism and fascism, it will never be true. Also, Mab is a bit bias blinded on some political issues dealing with the US. He has some valid criticisms, but he is pretty far off base in this thread. Just taking cheap shots.

Rat, is that piece of crap even possible in Canada? Don't you guys have something like the US bill of rights up there, that prevents government censorship of speech?

You should have been here during the G20. The authorities enforced a secret law that was about 70 years old, and almost nobody had ever heard of, and enforced non-existant laws that were basically made up on the spot.

This "can't happen here" attitude is simply wrong. Unconstitutional laws are adopted in the US all the damn time. It takes an enforcement of such laws (an enforcement which causes a conflict with constitutionally guaranteed rights) to spawn a court case, which could (with luck) result in an overturning of the law in question by a high court. The process can take years, decades or even centuries.

The easiest examples of just how wrong "it can't happen here" is "under God" in our Pledge and "In God We Trust" on our money. These things have been around for 50+ years, unconstitutionally promoting religious ideas in general, and approved by the courts as a "ceremonial deism" which supposedly can't possibly cause real harm to any religious people. Atheists are left to twist in the wind, legally, because the one real case against these things so far was brought by an atheist who SCOTUS decided didn't have standing to sue.

For another example, our nation's Capitol city just recently lost its gun-control laws - which had been in place for a long time - because of their conflict with the Second Amendment. Again, it happened here, and it took many, many years to change.

I'm sure we can all think of many more examples of Federal, state and local governments easily passing laws and rules which are unconstitutional on their faces. It happens here all the time, and it takes court action or a major change in legislative philosophy to fix (and a fix isn't guaranteed due to the fact that many judges are appointed for political reasons, even though we're all supposed to be above that sort of thing when seeking proper justice).

True enough. I suppose the good news is SCOTUS has strongly favored the free speech part of the first amendment. Most recently in the Phelps case. Hell, too much so because they gave free speech rights to corporations.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.
