Sorry, it must have been a day full of brain farts, after reading what I wrote with a clearer head (unaddled by overdoses of allergy medication and refreshed with sleep), yes, I did mean 'right wing'. What I did NOT mean was 'conservative', in my opinion they are two very different species.

I think the comparison to the American right wing is fair. Consider this: http://2parse.com/?p=5151

From a letter from a right wing coalition against Net Neutrality:
Net neutrality regulations also call into question how obscenity and other objectionable content on the Internet is treated. Let’s be clear, all content is not equal and does not deserve equal treatment, but net neutrality prohibits broadband service providers from prioritizing the content consumers want and preventing peddlers of child pornography from having unblocked access to every home Internet connection. It is critically important for parents and families to continue to have access to the tools necessary to keep unwanted content out of the home.
I agree that an identical law couldn't survive in the United States (even if it passed, it could be quickly challenged and judged unConstitutional.) However, the use of the bogeyman of child predators etc. to censor people on the Internet is quite similar.

Now that I have a bit more time let me clarify - I make a great distinction between 'conservatives' and 'right-wingers'. Eisenhower and Goldwater were conservatives, and people I have respect for. In the current political climate both would be considered flaming liberals, in fact Goldwater himself as much as said so during his later years. People like Palin, Bachmann, Gingrich, in fact just about anyone in the current crop of Republicans, are right-wingers. They believe in the constitution when it suits them and wipe their asses on it when it doesn't. They love women, as breeders and servants. They are all for racial equality, as long as the other races realise that some are more equal than others. They believe in immigration, as long as they provide cheap labour (especially as domestics). They believe in a woman's right to choose, as long as it's a choice between between having the baby willingly or unwillingly. They believe in science, as long as it's making weapons and backing up creationism. They believe in getting along with the rest of the world, as long as the rest of the world understands that they are to do as they're told. They believe in education, as long as you can afford it and you don't ask why you're being politically and religiously indoctrinated.

Fuck 'em all.

And don't think I'm letting the 'loony left' off the hook, they can be just as stupid and short-sighted.

I strongly suspect that if true liberals and true conservatives would return to their core values we would notice little to choose between the two. Their motivations might still be different but the results would be similar.
