I just listened to Terry Gross interview Maurice Sendak (The author and illustrator of Where the Wild Things Are and In the Night Kitchen) on "Fresh Air". Of course he talks about his work, but he also addresses a number of personal subjects, such as his being gay and never having had his own children. About 14 minutes in he talks about being someone with a secular worldview and how he looks at death and lonliness/sadness as he ages and watches people around him pass away. Lots of raw emotion, awkwardly funny moments, and moving quotes. The interview is only 20 minutes long and can be listened to online here. If you scroll down the link there are also highlights from the interview in text if those interested don't want to or don't have time to listen to the whole interview.
