L. Ron Hubbard.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?

L. Ron Hubbard.
Correct, Kil. Congratulations!

My trouble with using Hubbard as a subject was with the hints. He was so peculiar that almost every clue that came to mind, or that I researched, would have pointed unerringly at his identity. He was that idiosyncratic. Still, you got it with only two clues, which I thought were as vague as possible.

In WWII, Lafayette Ronald Hubbard, as skipper of the USS PC-815, claimed to have sunk at least one, and probably two Japanese submarines off the Oregon coast. The Navy later found that he'd attacked a magnetic anomaly on the ocean floor. The submarine he claimed to have definitely sunk was later sunk by other warships in the West Pacific.

On his own initiative, Hubbard later ventured into Mexican national waters, and shelled one of Mexico's Coronado Islands. For that attack on a WWII Ally, he was finally removed from command of the PC-815.

Of course, Hubbard went on after the war to write Dianetics and to found the Church of Scientology. Scientology to this day maintains Hubbard was a war hero. Of course, the leaders of that Church learned their mendacity from the Master of pseudologia fantastica, Hubbard himself.

The bulk of image in the OP was from the Young Indiana Jones, with the young Hubbard's face pasted over it. That face was from a photo of Hubbard as an Eagle Scout, apparently one of Hubbard's few real achievements in life, aside from enriching himself through his own lies. I used the Indy image because it looked more dramatic.
