Yes, Clarence Darrow, the "sophisticated country lawyer" and ACLU attorney who defended John T. Scopes in the infamous 1925 "Monkey Trial."
Scopes was charged with teaching evolution, contrary to Tennessee's Butler Act. The ACLU had set up Scopes for a test case.
The great Darrow lost the court case against opposing attorney, William Jennings Bryan. (Bryan died soon after the trial.)
Despite Darrow arguably having won the moral high ground in the trial, and the warm and fuzzy civil libertarian myth of his victory, Scopes was a disaster for both education and science. The result of Scopes meant anti-evolution laws spread like wildfires across the US.
And that was just Scopes 1. It seems there's a new Monkey Law coming to Tennessee in the 21st Century, and soon there will be a Tennessee Monkey Trial 2.
I found one of my creepier images for the background. The fellows in top hats look like they are up to no good, but when I pasted in Darrow's face, he looked like the meanest of them all. |

Best I recall, the background was a photo from a Polish movie named something like "The Hunters." Or maybe it was The Rasputins. |
