| Hi Robert. Any chance I'll be seeing you at the upcoming TAM this year? And don't be such a stranger!!! |
Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.
Why not question something for a change?

Looks vaguely familiar...
| Welcome back to Skeptic Friends Network, Robert! And, as a stroke survivor myself, I mean that in multiple ways. Congratulations on the well-earned JREF award, and keep the woos worrying!
|
Thanks, 'Mooner!
When was your stroke, and what residual effects o you still experience?
Receiving that award was a surreal experience. I had just spent eleven months in various hospitals, nursing homes and physical rehab centers, speaking only to medical staff and occasional visitors. To go from that to giving a speech on stage before more than a thousnd people and being handed an award by James Randi himself (a long-time hero of mine) was indescribable.
| My stroke was over 9 years ago, and it was not as devastating as yours. I was unable to walk for several weeks, but after that there was steady improvement. And my wife divorced me right after the stroke. I still have a less-than dextrous left hand, and a left leg that on rare occasions plants its toes into the ground and makes me stumble. I carry a cane to prevent falls when that happens. Most of the mental effects of the stroke (bad memory, inability to summon up proper nouns, ridiculous over-confidence, and poor concentration, mainly) are either gone now, or I've learned to ignore them. One odd effect that's lasted is that I'm a lot more prone to sentimentality than before. I cry during many movies. But I don't think that's a handicap, exactly.
I would be so proud if I were you! Not only the award, but being able to communicate so well again! Hell, I am proud just to to know you, Robert, even if only via the Interwebs. |
