Alain de Botton's idea of building "temples to atheism" frankly gives me the creeps. But as supernatural beliefs continue to fade and church attendance diminishes, there are hopefully going to be more and more empty churches, temples and mosques. Many of these building are architectural treasures, and it would be a shame to see them all bulldozed or collapsing from lack of maintenance.

I'm going to use this space to show some possible repurposing of places of worship. I may come back here and post other images over a period of time, just as I do with the various series on buses.

But to start with, how about using a church dome ceiling to display scientific knowledge? Here's a Phylogenetic Dome:

And the same dome used as a planetarium:

With a high-tech display system that dome could do either, or both.

In the declining years, an struggling church could put in a few raised lanes for bowling. This would leaving some space for pews off to the sides, and services could continue. The noise certainly would a small price to pay for the cold, hard cash of devout bowlers:

Istanbul's Blue Mosque could be converted into a Blew Mosque, and begin for the first time to collect real power from the sky:

I think the megachurches already have them.

Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. (Eph 5:15-17)

Apparently Geoffrey Robertson wants to re-purpose empty churches as public toilets. I think we can do better than that.

Of course, chain-outlet capitalism will also "fill the gaps," taking over defunct churches. The Starbucks below may have not intended their signage to look rather Pagan and suggestive, but that effect is arguably there, and could drive some Revelations-reading former churchgoers to hang themselves:

Yeah, they've got everything one could think of, including whole "company towns."

Thanks, Mab! I have no doubt the premise is good, but big ideas take energy and brilliance to actually carry them out. So I'm boned.

If I may HM, you are inspiring, here's my two cents worth......

"We are all connected; to each other biologically, to the earth chemically, to the rest of the universe atomically."

"So you're made of detritus [from exploded stars]. Get over it. Or better yet, celebrate it. After all, what nobler thought can one cherish than that the universe lives within us all?"

With just a bit of retrofitting, this beautiful double-helix staircase at the Vatican can be converted into a thrilling water-slide, "the Hellstrom":

Hindu temples, when/if they also go out of fashion...

I've wracked my brain trying to think of a repurposing for these monstrous sized piles of stone and gaudily painted statuary. I've got nothing.

They have almost no interior space to reuse, and they are inherently hazardous to climb about, so they can't be used as giant jungle gyms. The best I can come up with is to give them a thousand years to mellow, let nature take its course, and make them Angkor Wat-like tourist attractions.

But I'd appreciate any ideas for repurposing these temples.
