An "Update on the search for the Higgs Boson" is going to be presented July 4, 2012.
Reports from the experiments indicate that at least one of them, if not both, will reach the 5 sigma level of significance for the Higgs signal, when they combine 2011 and 2012 data and the most sensitive channels. So, this will definitely be the long-awaited Higgs discovery announcement, and party-time for HEP physicists.

It maybe a bit premature to say it as "this will definitely be the long-awaited Higgs discovery announcement,". Perhaps it should be stated, will this be the long-awaited Higgs discovery announcement, and party-time for HEP physicists?

All we can do is await the announcement and speculate. It would be very nice if the LHC came up with something big after all the time and effort that's gone into getting it built and running. It's been a long road, I can't wait.

Hope those buggers don't lose the damn thing on their way to do the announcement.

That would be embarrassing.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

I get the feeling this will be the long awaited "we can't find shit" and maybe we should stop giving SS"T" so much press considering it is completely unsupported by observation announcement.

who are SST?

You really think they will announce they couldn't find anything, after they already announced they had 5 sigma level confirmation on at least 1 experiment?

SST, Super-String "Theory", without the Higgs SST is in trouble. Also We will never be able to Fold-Space from Ix.

Edit: Im just messing around, that may not be clear. SST would love the lack of Higgs, though it would only give them more of nothing to go on.

If they've found nothing, they'll announce it, even if it ends the search for the Higgs boson. I suspect, though, that the announcement will be more like, "We've found very encouraging signs that the Higgs exists, but we'll need to run this baby for a few more months to acquire enough data to rise to the level of proof."

And just for those who worry about such things, the existence of the Higgs is not a matter of theological interest. Despite the poetically meaningful but unfortunate nickname, God Particle, there would be nothing holy or unholy about it. But its existence or nonexistence would help greatly in sorting out unified field hypotheses.

Dune reference for the win.

Maybe but only if it exists in reality. Which remains to be proven and announced. It's right to fear all Gods, which is saying it's right to fear all ignorance.

I have no fear of Higgs, a puny particle and fraction of an atom. Not visible I have my thumbs in my ears and am wiggling my fingers.

And yet the Higgs is compassionate. May it forgive you, and continue to grant you mass.
