A semi-woo neighborhood friend who often brings up the naturalistic fallacy recently brought up drug recalls and deaths from pharmaceuticals.

I wonder what percentage of all drugs that is and wonder what the problem is. Is it actually the medicine or the manufacturing process? Do the drug companies need more oversight? Are longer trials needed? Just human error?

From the first article:

"The rates of unintentional poisoning– from prescription opioids, sedatives and tranquilizers in the U.S. has surpassed motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of unintentional injury death."

Unintentional poisoning? What percentage from drug abuse and what from unintentional overdose of legit prescription?

At least 3 of the drugs on the 2012 recall list are non-prescription erectile dysfunction capsules or "dietary supplements" and those are being recalled in their entirety. Most of the rest are for recalls of one or a few lots of a drug, probably due to manufacturing defect or inspection failure.

I see only one big name, Pfizer, and it was voluntary for possible inexact amounts. Another product is a voluntary recall for a hair growth product because it was not approved by the FDA. Other recalls are because contamination was found in the clean rooms.

Good thing that they're regulated. I wonder how many Alt Med recalls there'd be if they were regulated to the extent of real medicine.

Probably not many at all. If they were regulated the same as real medications then they would have to show effectiveness in order to get on the market.
