I have been reading that Ryan wants to outlaw oral contraceptives, abortion, etc but also wants to cut medicaid. So he is basically saying women have to have babies and then won't be able to get prenatal care or child health care.
He also makes his staff read Ayn Rand. So I guess he endorses torture also |

Yes, quantity of life, not quality of life. It's important to crank out imagined souls to be sorted in the magical afterlife, no matter how painful the beforedeath journey.

In a recent post over at Think Progress, they noted some classic (and entirely expected) Ryan hypocrisy.
The thrust of the issue is this: Ryan has been against Obama's stimulus plan and claimed that he never requested any money from it. Then, the AP discovered some letters he'd written, where he, well, wrote to various government agencies to support their applications for stimulus money.
When called out on this, he gave a typically deft politician's reply, sayingAfter having these letters called to my attention I checked into them, and they were treated as constituent service requests in the same way matters involving Social Security or Veterans Affairs are handled. This is why I didn’t recall the letters earlier. But they should have been handled differently, and I take responsibility for that. | Forget, for a moment, the ambiguous "they should have been handled differently" comment (how so?) and the meaningless "and I take responsibility" bit. What's interesting to me is what he said next: "Regardless, it’s clear that the Obama stimulus did nothing to stimulate the economy."
OK-- this is what the Republican leadership has been saying all along, so Ryan saying this now isn't interesting. Except, it is!
In one of his letters in support of his district receiving a stimulus grant, Ryan wrote:I am writing to express my support for the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation's application for the Energy and Conservation Block Program which wassubmitted to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) . . . primary objectives of their project will . . . stimulate the local and area economy by creating new jobs. For example, the applicant believes that the business portion of their project will . . . create or retain approximately 7,600 new jobs over the 3 year grant period and the subsequent 3 years. [emphasis mine] |
Did you catch that? Ryan wrote supporting this grant application in part because it would stimulate the economy and create or retain jobs. So on the one hand, in public, he says that the stimulus was a failure, but then in private, he argues that it will do exactly what it is supposed to do!!
One could argue that Ryan's attack on Obama was that the stimulus failed because Obama didn't do it right. But one only need read a little bit further to know that the basic GOP argument against the stimulus was that such things, by definition, are not the best way to get us out of this recession, and that better is to do stuff like cut taxes on the rich and slash spending on government programs for the poor and middle class.
I used to wonder if the plutocrats on the right really believed their own arguments, or if they were just lying to sabotage the economy for their own political gain. And when I pondered this, I didn't know if it was worse if they were just stupid, or plain evil. But now it doesn't matter: it's clear that they're evil. They knew that Obama's plan would have worked (and indeed, as many economists noted, it should have been bigger!), but sided against it because they didn't want the economy to improve. Secretly, though, when given the chance to improve their own electoral chances, they used those grants when they could.
I know that this is hardly surprising. But it is still to me stunning to see it right here in print. I wish wish wish the press-- someone, anyone would call them out on this in some public forum so people could see. But I know no one will.
And thus, a generation will suffer with being unemployed (or under employed). And as someone who's on the verge of that, I am afraid for the future as long as these people have the power that they do. |

I have a new hero!
Rage Against the Machine never really was my favourite style of music, however being included in the The Matrix soundtrack, I've paid a little more attention to them. And they are growing on me. This makes them even more interesting, and I'm going to give them more "air-time" on the computer where I'm currently listening to Jethro Tull.

Well, in the 80s when I was a Pentacostal, they were on my Very Suspicious People list. It was back in the days when I didn't know that WASP meant White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. The youth pastor insisted it meant something completely different, but I had my suspicions he wasn't right, but we were fostered not to question authority so I kept quiet. But I'm digressing. I never was a huge fan of Twisted Sister either, but they belong to the 80s Rock genre with which I grew up.
Edited to add: Many comments on Dee Snyder's blog is axing his stand against Ryan. Sad.

Dee Snyder was there with Frank Zappa testifying before congress when they wanted to put warning labels on LP's. The funny thing is the warning labels actually made albums more desirable. But yeah. He's been a policial guy all along. And I happen to like Twisted Sister because they are so over the top. They were the ugliest hair band around, and they played that up. Funny guy. |
