I don't remember the scene or the context. But Doc X seemed to have plenty of obscure references in his bag of tricks, and I just ignored them as intentional failures of communication.
(I just looked up Lexx on Netflix, and I rated it with one star, which suggests a reason why I don't even remember watching it at all.) |

Elsewhere on SFN, Doctor X seemed skeptical and educated enough but his performance in this thread was really disappointing. I guess we all have our blind spots, but this one was a train wreck.

Well, I certainly don't think A+ is a cult. Any movement may become one, however, especially a cult of personality. But I simply don't see that happening with A+.
My objections were and are minor, relating mainly to the implications and explications of the name. What A+ is, is a faction or tendency within atheism attempting to take on social issues. I only disagree with them that it has been shown that they have yet demonstrated a logical connection between atheism and those causes.
As my interests encompass the same territory as theirs, I think my objections are very minor. I'll certainly not be labeling A+ as a "cult" unless there is some indication that it is becoming one. |

Probably because of the name they chose. "+" implies superiority. When you brand yourself as "X+" the implication is that you are better than X. | Yes, activists for social justice are better than sexists, homophobes, racists, misogynists, classists, ableists, transphobes and the rest of the asswipes. Do you really want to argue against that? |
I realize I'm practicing some necromancy, but it's just that the way this is written sounds like a straw man, I'll agree that activists of social justice are better the than the groups you listed, but I will also argue there exist X's that are not in those groups and also are not X+'s, thus deflecting your argument from OFFC's point.
I think you agree given your history (correct me if not), but this is the way that particular post is written, and a lot of A+ material seems to be written, and it's in part just a misunderstanding.
It's like Romney's "47%" -- it's not wrong that he said he has little shot at getting many votes among the 47% with his tax message, it's wrong that he went on the conflate them with those who don't take responsibility for themselves and think they're victims, implying superiority of all of the other 53%. |
