It's almost midnight on the morning of December 21, 2012 here in the Philippines as I begin writing this. Depending on where you live on the globe, this may be your first report of how the enormously over-hyped "Mayan Doomsday" prophecy has actually turned out. If Doomsday comes tonight, I'll be one of the first to know, given my GMT +8 time zone.

I'm out on my upper floor terrace writing on my laptop. Given my nearly ideal geographic location for such a purpose, I occurred to me that I was in a good position to be among the first to debunk the Mayan End Time Calendar doomsday myth.

My phone's alarm just went off. It's now midnight here.

So far, things are a bit odd, I must admit.

There must have been yet another power outage here, as my UPS's alarm just peeped. I'm now running my DSL router and laptop off that backup power. The UPS battery won't last forever, so this will be a brief and hasty post.

The night sky suddenly seems a very deep, bloody red. It's creepy. I'm pretty sure I've never seen it like that here. My only lighting comes from the screen of my laptop. All the lights in the streets and homes here, even lanterns and automobile headlights, are now out.

The stars in the sky appear to be trembling, constellations twisting and moving. Must be my imagination! There are mournful screams of people and the howls of thousands of dogs coming from all directions.

This is definitely uncool. I have goosebumps.

Now the earth has begun to shake just a bit. I can hear the widows rattling in this house, and objects falling. Getting worse! There, I just now heard a loud, crumbling crash accompanied by shouts of pain. Somewhere in the neighborhood, at least one house has collapsed.

There's now a sulfurous smell in the air. Smoke everywhere. Something is raining down in yellow, glowing droplets. THe brimstone smell (sulfur dioxide?) is geting stronger, and I'm beginnig to cough, my eyes wattering. The droplets seeme to be burning sulfur. The stars have now all gone out. The sky is changing from blood red to a deep purple,Houses are catching fire. Roar like a chorus of a millon tigers. Greenglowing tentacles rising, i am BUrning.Im screEming can't breath much lon ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

A fleeing rat could have scurried across the keyboard. Anything! I say we assume the worst until we hear more.

So, I'm wondering what excuses the doomsayers have this time?

Well, at least for financial and mysterious cultist reasons, I suppose some people took it seriously. In China, over 600 members of a Christian sect are under arrest for allegedly exploiting the Mayan Doomsday in order to get people to give their church all their possessions.

There must have been some True Believers of this nonsense, just to give business to those who are cynically exploiting it.

As I posed previously above I think this was very funny and still do. The opening post (OP) WAS very funny and creative whether you got it or not. It's no surprise it is over your head. Here is what escaped you with his thread, IMO. Others here could see immediately that Mooner was having fun with the ridiculousness of anyone who accepts at face value and believes as true any stupid claim presented as true with no evidence. Specifically this Mayan Calender dribble.

Surly you must know people who do the same thing with other beliefs just as unfounded? Oh! that's right you do. You posted that you work with people who had bought into that 12-12-12 email. What kind of work do you and these people do? Of course you don't have to answer that.

It's not that Mooner was "talking crap as usual", he rarely does that without it being a joke. Mooner was making fun of the people who believe those people who talk crap. There is the big difference.

The Mayans only predicted the descent of a minor god on this solstice. I blame pseudo-historians, New Age muddled thinking, and fear mongers.
