Maybe ignore the second half of the article, it turns into a bit of a Rick Warren advertisement, and it doesn't actually consider any differing views, but how does one maintain a pro-choice stance and combat sex-selective abortion?
Obviously in China we can argue for changing the laws somehow, but female children are being aborted at much higher rates than males in India without, as far as I know, any sort of legal pressure. I realize sex-selective abortions are technically illegal there, but I suspect it's nearly impossible to prove an abortion was in fact decided on the basis of sex, without some rule requiring abortions occur before it's possible to discern sex, but that cuts into some folks' ideas of being pro-choice.
So, does one support (slow) cultural change or what?

Prevent the parents from knowing the sex until the third term.

Really,
Besides China, where would this be prevalent?
I think you have to focus on the major issues with abortion. Ensure a sterile place for them to happen. Ensure access to them. The abortion decision is up to the person requesting one.
I think China has their own set of issues and they have to publicize their problem with a male favored society and the one child only policy. But, being a totalatarian regime, they will come up with something overbearing and ineffective. Executions will happen and jailings, etc, etc, etc.
I really don't think that this is a real overbearing issue elsewhere. People have to be free to do damn stupid things. |

India:
Only 914 girls for every 1,000 boys under age 6 in India, according to the 2011 census—the greatest gender imbalance seen in the country of 1.2 billion since its 1947 independence. |
They mention Albania and Azerbaijan too, but give no numbers.
Ultrasound availability and gender disparity have been rising simultaneously in India (the article argues causation, but correlation is certainly there), and availability is currently growing in rural areas now, where the preference for boys is thought to be highest. I really don't think they have the ability to regulate when it's used very effectively.
Ultrasound is illegal for this reason in China, but is widely used anyway, and obviously the gender disparity exists there, certainly exacerbated by the one child policy (which is why I'm a little less interested in how to handle it there, because I suspect this policy is a major contributor). |
