Completely unrealistic expectations.

I've seen so many kids act as if practicing sports is a good path into college, even in states where you can get free tuition at state schools for getting national average scores on college entrance exams (WV, FL are the states with which I'm familiar), not to mention the availability of even more need-based aid to cover housing costs.
A small subset (sure, more than 1/660,000, but almost certainly still no more than 1%) can turn their skills into a college scholarship. The graduation rate then ends up being low because they're really not prepared for college.
Schools, parents, state governments, whoever can influence, need to work much harder to raise awareness of these really not-so-high requirements to get full assistance with college. In 90% of cases, high school sports end up being completely worthless for college (and almost certainly useless as a career path) when probably significantly less effort in academics has a massively higher rate of return. |
