Half Of Americans Believe In Medical Conspiracy Theories

I don't find this particularly surprising, though it is somewhat discouraging. Sometimes I think skeptics are just pissing into the wind.

From the article:
Twenty percent of people said that cellphones cause cancer — and that large corporations are keeping health officials from doing anything about it. And another 20 percent think doctors and the government want to vaccinate children despite knowing that vaccines cause autism.

"One of the things that struck us is that people who embrace these beliefs are not less health conscious," says Eric Oliver, a professor of political science at the University of Chicago who led the study. "They're just less likely to embrace traditional medicine."

Oliver was studying political conspiracy theories when he realized that quite a few of them involved medical care, including vaccine avoidance and a vote rejecting water fluoridation in Portland, Ore.

So he asked people what they thought about six common medical conspiracy theories, including the ones about vaccines, cellphones and natural cancer cures. They were the theories most widely supported.

Uncertainty may make you uncomfortable. Certainty makes you ridiculous.

Why not question something for a change?

It's because of defects in the genetic wiring of our brains. So much for being a perfect creator or if there is a perfect God He screwed up creating man. More Dogma that doesn't add up.

There are only two types of religious people, the deceivers and the deceived. SS

With such brain wiring, clearly God wants us to remain in small hunter-gatherer tribes.

Yeah! It's either God or really those who keep that delusion alive.

Don't be discouraged my friend. It is normal that people have feelings from time to time that are not supported by the reality of the situation that brought on those feelings. It's normal but not justified. That's what you feeling. I believe that things are getting better on many fronts just not all at the same pace. Change takes time. Whether it will continue or not, the momentum is closer aligned with you and those who are progressing as you are. What's happening in Texas today is a far cry from 20 years ago on the Gay issue. Don't be discouraged, not all fronts make progress in locked step at the same pace.

As far as one medical conspiracy is concerned statical data is growing, showing the effects of not vaccinating your children. Given enough time and enough dead babies parents should start to see the light. We can at least hope so. As the statical data grows showing the folly of this movement it should begin to be apparent to those who are deluded now. Only time will tell if that happens. I think it's unavoidable.
