Hiya, folks!
Since it's near the beginning of the month, I'd like to issue the SFN's first call for nominations for both "Post of the Month" and "Thread of the Month," for March. We'll collect the nominations here in this thread, and then the staff will make the final choices, and publish links to the selected post and thread in the first Skeptic Summary following the beginning of the next month, and I'll edit the selected items to reflect their status.
Please keep in mind the SFN's mission statement when nominating posts and threads:The mission of the Skeptic Friends Network is to promote skepticism, critical thinking, science and logic as the best methods for evaluating all claims of fact, and we invite active participation by our members to create a skeptical community with a wide variety of viewpoints and expertise. The reason I'm starting this thread now is that I'd like you to go ahead and post nominations while things are fresh in your head, instead of trying to remember stuff after the month in question is over. Feel free to nominate more than one post and/or thread, or even to "de-nominate" your own previous nominations if you feel that a better post or thread comes along later in the month.
Please do not nominate your own posts, or even threads you've started. And let's definitely refrain from arguing about nominations (or the results). Also, while I've got high hopes for this effort, I feel I must say that the staff reserves the right to disqualify, modify or otherwise ignore any and all nominations for "Post of the Month" and "Thread of the Month," and we also reserve the right to change, modify or otherwise ignore any rule or guideline, whether they be express, implied or completely unstated.

(scratches head) Hell Dave, I dunno. We've had some pretty good threads that are still running, albeit sporadicly. If I had to pick now, I might go with something that jimrobb started.
As to the best post thus far this month, well, as friend verlch is currently AWOL, I'd say anything by latinijarl.

Thank you very much for your vote of confidence; it warms the heart. But sadly and regretfully, I must state that if nominated, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve.
I intend to retire and spend more time with my family and those of my limbs that remain in working order.
But again, I thank you.

I'd like to nominate this post as the post-of-the-month.
My motivation: Furshur is successfully taking an example from real life to use as a point-by-point reference when examining the "new scepticism" from Mr. Drasin's list as latinjral suggested. |

I'd like to nominate this post by Randy as post of the month, simply because it made me laugh so hard I sprayed Diet Coke all over my desk. That deserves something.

Thanks for the vote, Wendy. I hope you don't happen to have your desk at a nuclear power plant, like maybe inside the control room. You/we could have caused the dreaded Diet Coke Syndrome. |

Nah, the worst that might have happened would be I'd have to take the Judge a spit-stained pleading. It was worth it for the laugh.
Good luck!

For Thread of the Month, I rather favor this one, although it does not really address the mission....or does it?
For a post, I meant to nominate this one, but forgot in the heat of the latinijral conniption. Sorry 'bout that, B'gal!

beskeptigal has several posts on that one page. Which one, in particular, did you want to nominate? |

The first one. I have not yet mastered the art of picking one out of many, but no matter. Her OP, I thought, was excellent.

Sure you have! You said, "the first one."
Of course, if you're referring to the ability to select one post from among all of the posts we get here in a month, you don't have to. Feel free to nominate more than one. Feel free to nominate dozens, if you find them all more-or-less equally noteworthy. Feel free to "de-nominate" your own prior nominations, if you find one (or some) later in the month which blow away your previous choices.
We (the SFN staff) are not asking you to choose the best post and thread of the month, only to nominate the candidates. We will be making the final picks.
(And if you weren't referring to that, I still felt a need to publicly clarify the purpose of the nominating process, anyway.) |
