Damn. You looked.
There is still hope! Do not open the two links below, or you will never sleep again.
This is bad
Oh God, this is worse. Turn down the sound, my friends
Now, if you want a more scientific look at this evilness, look here
My favorite line from the above article is this: quote: We touched the centipede several times with a stick, attempting to scare it away and release the bat, but contrary to what we expected, the centipede responded by partly coiling around the bat and holding it more tenaciously.
They done poked it with a stick! All in the name of science you understand.

Well, you did warn me. As a mammal-chavinist, I found this stuff very, very creepy.

Centipedes are some of the most interesting of arthropods. In fact, they're downright neat. I am familiar with this species, having a friend who is a tarantula freak. He also not only keeps but breeds S. gigantea and sells the offspring to other dingbats of like mind. He's been bitten a number of times and these days, having gained some hard-earned smarts, only handles them with tongs. Their bites are definatly medically significent. Far worse than any tarantula (most of which aren't all that hot, anyway).
While I find 'pedes fascinating, I think I'll stick with rattlesnakes.... Easier to get along with.
Thanks Trog. Great videos!
Edit: the bugs on the cave floor are probably the janitorial staff: cockroachs. Here's an article from Wikkipedia on this species, complete with a couple more videos that the squeamish might enjoy. quote: Scolopendra gigantea, commonly identified as the ‘Peruvian giant yellowleg centipede' or ‘Amazonian giant centipede', is the world's largest representative of scolopendras which can reach lengths of up to 26 cm (10 inches). The species inhabits the North and West regions of South America and the islands of Trinidad and Jamaica. It feeds on lizards, frogs, birds, mice and even bats.
The size estimate is on the short side. They get a fair bit longer than 10".

Giant Centipedes eating animals? Yes, very high on the creepy meter. But child's play compared to "Nina Hagen & Heino"! What's that you say? Try this! (If you dare!) |

Right you are, Chippewa. Give me a nest of giant centipedes any day. |

Thanks to Kil, this has to be the creepiest thing I've ever seen. It's not work-safe, and it's extremely disturbing. This from someone who wasn't bothered in the slightest by the centipede videos. Fair warning given!
I'll probably have nightmares tonight. Dammit. |

Haven't you posted that before Dave? Perhaps it was just in chat. My memory aint what it used to be. Did I mention my memory aint what it used to be? Now I cant remember what it used to be. What was I talking about?
For thems that's interested, some notes and comments from the director can be found here. Personally, I think the images from the booklet are far more disturbing than the video itself, mind you, I've not watched it in slow-motion, nor in a chemically modified state. |

lol. The beginning is creepy, but then it reveals itself to be the farce that it is. Kinda of funny, actually.

Is there actually a maximum size to which an arthropod can grow? I imagine the tracheal oxygen uptake system puts strict limits on their maximum size. |
