Just THIS In...from the AP...

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is sending a message to the Cuban people imploring them not to flee the island for Florida because of political uncertainty.

- - - -

YO: Get ready skeptics everywhere. If G. War doesn't fuck up with Cuba soon, it will come as a great and pleasant surprise. Sounds like Condi is already tryin' to pimp a new boat lift.

Do you think issues will mount with the Carribean island?

YO: Oh, Oh. Here I am responding to my own post. Actually, it isn't a response, it's an update. Maybe there'll be someone now, who'll have some other thoughts regarding G. War and his natural- born instinct to fuck up everything. Just THIS In....

U.S. Asked to Not Interfere in Cuba 5:31 p.m. ET
HAVANA (AP) -- Leftist intellectuals and human rights activists from around the world pleaded with the United States on Monday not to interfere with Cuba while Fidel Castro recovers from intestinal surgery.

I can't be the only one who gets a kick out of OY's News updates-- all punctuated with a sort of palandromic YO: [text] OY!. Anyhow...

Yeah, the Cuba thing is stupid and its a testament to the new ineptness of the CIA and our other intel groups that this whole thing appears to have caught us by surprise. Of course, its possible that Our Leader really was up to speed on this (He speaks Spanish, you know!) but then he and his whole administration should get awards for playing dumb so well.

Bush was quoted on NPR throughout the day as saying that he knew no more about Castro's health and the Cuban situation than the average America. Gee, that sure gives me confidence in our Dear Leader.

This is an OK article about the transfer of power, and if you scroll down, the second half that summarizes Castro's career is better: http://news.scotsman.com/politics.cfm?id=1148032006

It starts with the line in bold: Communist leader determined his legacy will endure

As much as I detest most of the violent tactics used by Castro to maintain power, I can't help thinking that had the USA managed to remove him, there simply would have been a different system ruled by the wealthy Cubans, heavily influenced by US political and corporate interests, causing a different kind of suffering. The USA practically sets things up so that small, weaker nations like Cuba either have to give in to US dominence or become an outright dictatorship in order to survive. I don't like the idea of one guy in charge for so many decades, but how different is it from the USA's long lines of white/rich/male senators, congressmen and Presidents who tend to have come from the same families, attended the same schools, and have many of the same corporate connections? Cuba has made a great deal of social progress over the decades, and yet we still have that stupid embargo against them and demonize their political system.

Bleach - politics. Can't stand it, can't stand to ignore it.

I hope in the future Cuba managed to keep governmental stability, continues to ward off abusive powers of the very rich and US interests, continues to have a high Human Development Index relative to its neighbors, that it continues to loosen laws that restrict personal freedoms. And I really hope Bush means it when he says he plans to leave the future of Cuba up to the Cuban people.

Bush probably means only those Cuban people in Miami who hate Castro and his followers. I also hope that if and when Cuba opens up more, it will not be as corrupted by greed and crime as Russia has been.

YO: I'm humbled by such adulation from hard-nosed, honest skeptics. It's one of the highest forms of compliment, I believe.

Regarding our policy with Cuban again: Lou Dobbs on CNN had a piece today about the U-S's hypocritical, separate policies for two different communist nations: Cuba, whom we abhor...and China, who's ass we kiss constantly. There both communist, for Chrissakes, but the Sino-Commies are better at exploiting their own in all the biz they do across the world. Can you imagine the biggest communist nation on earth outlawing labor unions? Well, just think China.

Now we know!!! They also hold a lot of our debt. Cuba is but a thorn in our Caribbean side. Another anology is that Cuba is like Taiwan in reverse, but I think we've all thought about that parallel.

One respectfully submitted correction: It's spelled palindromic.

Bush put his foot in his mouth on Cuba before Castro was even out of surgery with the stupid speech encouraging the Cubans to rise up against the oppressor. Then Bush had to backtrack and immediately add, "But stay there."

I think mostly the FL Cubans see Fidel as an oppressor. He stole their riches. Here is the one country where despite having a dictator and all the loss of freedom that entails, it appears true communism mostly prevails: health care, housing, and a decent life for the most part.

It's a toss up between our leaders catering to the Cuban voters vs they just can't stand the thought of a socialist country where the people are actually better off than they were before. And here we've been shoving capitalism down the throats of the rest of Central America at the end of death squad guns.

I prefer capitalism but certainly don't begrudge others choosing otherwise.

I think they'd prefer capitalism to the near slavery that they had under Batista rule.

I think Castro only called himself a Communist when he found out the Soviet Union would be the only country that would have anything to do with them, so they went from being a U.S. colony to a U.S.S.R. colony, which was probably slightly better.

But it's been 50 years, no? Most "Cubans" in Florida are really Floridians who had Cuban parents, no? Or Cubans who left when they were children back in the Carter administration and had few "riches" to lose?

I don't know where I'm going with this, but I've always been confused by the "Cuban" contigent in Florida.

I'm only saying that he did not call himself Communist until the U.S. shunned him, and the only place he had to turn was the Soviet Union. Only then did it become a Communist revolution. Before that, it was just nationalist.
