Antigone, thank you very much! The alcohol suggestion worked perfectly.

I'm glad it worked out for you, Half! I knew that nursing degree and all those years working in hospitals would come in handy some day

It sure did prove handy. And now I even know how to remove a bandage without pain, as a bonus: Simply drink enough alcohol first, then no pain!

Half, please make sure NOT to over soak the bandage with alcohol, only a little on the sticky stuff. You'll be in for quite a shock (as you know) if the cut gets alcohol on it. I often forget simple stuff like this and end up doing stupid things ... such as blowing crumbs off the table with an ashtray close by, or pressing what I think is the 'send' button after dialing a number on my land-line and hanging up instead...
My latest brainfart was the other morning. I was making coffee, half awake ... well maybe 1/4 awake ... put the coffee grounds in the filter, got some coffee grounds on the brew well, thought to myself "blowing the coffee grounds away instead of wiping them away with a napkin would be better," blew in the huge pile of coffee grounds in the filter along with the few coffee grounds i meant to blow on, and got a very big surprise in my eyes!
I'm sure I'll never do THAT again! For the past week everytime I make coffee I recite "Don't blow on the coffee" over and over...
There are some things you only have to learn once, I am sure that's one of em...

I could tell a volume of tales about my zombie-like behavior prior to becoming caffeinated each day, Antigone. They would include your coffee-grounds trick, just for starters. And the shattering of countless carafes, sometimes when filled with fresh-brewed coffee. Don't worry, if I use too much alcohol on a bandage to remove it, I will probably be using it as a technique to wake up.

Here's a song about partying. It's just a great party song for all those times you feel like partying. It's called Party Party Party!

Listening on my laptop. Did the song really say "Party make you farty" ?

Went looking for lyrics, and found what is apparently the source of that song.

Listening to it again, you're mostly right, moak:
Party party party
Party make me farty
Gotta take antacid
So I can keep on party(ing?)
High art.

Yep, that's where I first heard it. It just stuck in my head.

"Uh, do you have any happier song about, uh, partying?"

I received my copy of My Tank is Fight by Zack Parsons yesterday. (It's the new book about Nazi superweapons.) It looks to be every bit as much fun as I'd hoped. After I've finished reading it, I'll post a review here in the Book Reviews forum.

I once read that there were several science fiction writers who worked on the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, Alamogordo, New Mexico, and elsewhere. Does anyone have information on this?

(The recent illustration I did includes three science fiction authors photographed at work for the military, but that was in Philadelphia.)

No clue on the answer to your question, Half (Google is most definitely not being my friend), but I did run across this interesting piece on the power of science fiction.

Thanks, Dave. Google was not my friend on this issue, either. I did end up with a ton of references to William Gibson, who was born in Oak Ridge, though, and a few mentions of how many science fiction readers worked there.

Cool article, Dave! That's neat how the Astounding A-bomb stories frightened some security folks, but how others eventually cooled their jets. If John Campbell hadn't known about the US bomb project before, he surely was tipped to it by the questions he was asked.
