Poll Question:
In your opinion, the proper skeptical response to the statement, "I have been abducted by aliens and I know they are real," is what?

I never met anyone who claimed to be a UFO abductee, though I have met a number of people who claimed to have been anally probed. (I did not ask for evdience!)

I'm not sure, but I think its a bit wrong to automatically accuse them of lying or being crazy. If you pick option 5 It should become apparent if they are telling the truth, a lie, or what they THINK is the truth without being too confrontational. |
What are you looking at? Haven't you ever seen a pink shirt before?

Depends on the circumstances. If I meet someone on the street, and they don't say, "What do you think about that?," depending on how much time one has, the best response is "Oh, really", and keep on walking, or "Oh, really, please do go on" if I feel like wasting time.
If they ask me, or if they come on a discussion board, I'm liable to ask them to elaborate to see if I can see where the conversation ought to go from there. |

My vote echoed my real life experience with an "abductee". A woman I knew fairly well (this is now more than 15 years ago) told me that she AND her daughter had both been abducted and tested medically, by extraterrestrials. I was obviously shocked. This woman was "normal" in every way. Great person, excellent sense of humor, good job, stable family life, etc. But she was absolutely serious about the abduction. My response was to just let her talk about it and gather information from her without supporting or negating her belief. At one point, she did ask my opinion of it, and asked if I thought she was crazy.
I do not think she is or was mentally ill, but I do believe that she experienced something along the lines of a hypnagogic or hypnopompic state. I did suggest that she talk with a licensed psychologist or even a psychiatrist or neurologist to try and determine if she was having any physiological issues. Unfortunately, she went to an unlicensed "therapist" who eagerly reinforced and expanded her experiences.
I don't live in that area any longer, so I never found out any more from her. I sure hope she found a legit psychologist though, because this other idiot had her and her daughter convinced of the alien abduction crap. |
