Poll Question:
What method should be used to combat global warming?

Choices:
Silence all pundits, as they release 10 times the hot air of normal people
Explode a-bombs to create a 'nuclear winter' just large enough to counteract the warming
Move Earth farther away from the Sun
Use ice from comets to cool the Earth
Pump a few trillion tons of sulfides into the upper atmosphere to block solar radiation
Build gigantic mirrors in space to reflect some of the Sun's energy away
Sequester carbon by ramping up plastic production a thousandfold
Other (please explain)

Other - Build a chimney to space so that anything we burn, the emissions will go straight into space.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.

Check out how your area would be affected by rising sea levels.
I'm alright.

Thanks, Hawks, that mapping is great food for thought!

My home would survive a 7 meter sea rise, as there are rising bluffs along the ocean here. The sea would only come in a few meters.

But elsewhere in California, John Steinbeck's Cannery Row in Monterey, along with the wonderful Monterey Bay Aquarium, would be inundated. The city of Alameda would mostly be drowned, as would much of Oakland, Berkeley, Richmond, and San Pablo. San Francisco's Financial District would go the way of Atlantis. Menlo Park would flood.

A new inland sea would appear deep in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley, stretching almost from Yuba City to Modesto. This sea would cover Interstate Highway 5, the main West Coast north-south highway. It would also wash out some of the most important fresh water aqueducts in the state. Sacramento itself would be at least partly flooded.

In the state's south, the Gulf of California (which presently does not touch this state) would likely extend almost to Palm Springs, engulfing the present (and shrinking) Salton Sea, and destroying the cities of Indio, El Centro, and Calexico (and Mexicali, across the border in the Mexican State of Baja California Del Norte.)

That's all just Califonia, which is not an especially low-lying or flat state.

Of course, a lesser degree of sea level rise is probably more likely than seven meters, especially in this century.

My house (Christchurch, New Zealand) would be flooded after a 12 meter rise. Assuming it doesn't rain too much.

Well, Cleveland survives. I guess rising sea levels won't affect the levels of the Great Lakes.
