Just for the record, saying that VA Tech's admissions process seem to be at odds with its stated admission goals is not the same as saying that Cho got in without being qualified. I don't think anyone who gets in isn't qualified. But I imagine a huge number of very qualified people don't get in, and how the decisions are actually made does not seem to match up with the stated goals.

How is the process at odds with the stated goals just because a reporter made an assumption about supposed extra points for being in a minority? What I'm saying, (and I tried to use a citation that avoided those assumptions but I guess I wasn't careful enough), is we only know what the qualifications were. We don't know what was on Cho's application, nor how he was chosen.

We do know about 1 out of every 4 applicants gets in. Some of those might be people who apply at more than one school and choose not to go if accepted because they were also accepted elsewhere. But the number of applicants per slots still indicates the school is very competitive. The average grades of applicants also makes it appear to be a very competitive school.

I'm trying to understand why so many assumptions are being made either that Cho was carelessly let in or got in with special assistance. Schizophrenia is often an adult onset disease. Whatever made Cho an odd child, it wasn't schizophrenia. We don't know what he was like when he applied to the university.

So if you weren't assuming anything about Cho, what is it that makes you think the admission process was at odds with the stated goals? Just the reporter's assumption? Or did I miss something else?

Yes, you're still missing VA Tech's own statements about building a community of students, who are engaged with the world and active in outreach, which is more-or-less impossible if all you pay attention to is grades and test scores. The point is not that Cho was let in carelessly, it's that their admission standards appear to disregard the college's own mission.

But you're ignoring me, so I guess marf or someone else will have to clue you in.

As usual, AIG has come up with their own spin on this, more detailed than the link I posted on the first page of this topic; and as usual, they blame evolution (again)...though the people at Internet Infidels give them a good smacking down.

What brought that on? this. Original posting here.

Another example of this guy's lunacy here.

from AIG:
"Those who truly desire to follow Christ know that vengeance is the Lord's—it is not our place to decide who lives and who dies."

Me: Well, why then the religious right is not set on banning the death penalty? Maybe they are and since I donīt live in the US I am not aware of it?

from AIG:
"...if we are told by the Bible that we are no better than anyone else, why would we have any feeling of superiority? How could we judge? "

Me: I donīt know. You tell me.

And the rest of the BS argument from AIG is not worth reproducing.

I donīt get it. They talk about moral relativism and its danger, they say the bible has the answers. However, thereīs no way you can take (all of) the bible literally. They donīt. So how come they can tell other people whatīs to be taken literally and whatīs not. And even if they donīt want to, theyīre interpreting parts of the bible, A HUMAN BEIGN INTERPRETING THE WORD OF GOD! HERETICS!

I would respect them more if they would act according to the beliefs they preach, but they donīt, so... there!

Cheers!

The religious right is rabidly, and overwhelmingly, in favor of the death penalty. Somehow that fits right into their culture of life thing.
