As the article states, this is more reason we need a national day of reason.

Great article, thanks! It's fascinating to see how the Religious Right sells Christian exclusionist sectarianism under the label of religious freedom, and gets politicians to help them.

From the "National Day of Prayer Official Website,"quote: Mission The National Day of Prayer Task Force's mission is to communicate with every individual the need for personal repentance and prayer, mobilizing the Christian community to intercede for America and its leadership in the five centers of power: Church, Education, Family, Government and Media.
Our Vision and Values In accordance with Biblical truth, the National Day of Prayer Task Force seeks to:
      * Foster unity within the Christian Church * Protect America's Constitutional Freedoms to gather, worship, pray and speak freely. * Publicize and preserve America's Christian heritage * Encourage and emphasize prayer, regardless of current issues and positions * Respect all people, regardless of denomination or creed * Be wise stewards of God's resources and provision * Glorify the Lord in word and deed
Who We Are We are the Judeo-Christian expression of the National Day of Prayer which was established in 1952 by a joint resolution of the United States Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman. The United States was born in prayer and founded on a relationship with God while instituting His biblical principles and moral values.

5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. |

Perry: quote: "Freedom of religion should not be mistaken for freedom from religion," Perry said.
Duh. "Freedom," Mr. Governor, means the liberty to practice or not practice the religion of one's choice!
To see the word "freedom" used for the supression of anyone's liberty is obscene.
Screw Perry. In the old Texas vernacular, "He's a man who needs hanging."
