If not, we can have a discussion about that.

Does anyone recall the church sign stating: "THERE ARE NO ATHEISTS IN HELL!"

I had it saved, but it mysteriously went away when I changed computers. I seem to recall that it was Ricky who orginally posted it.

Actually, you could also say believers too; since we all know the heaven/hell concept is one of the most vulgar of religious fairy tales.

In the bible "hell" actually means only, hole in the ground.

Sheol (hebrew), and Hades (greek). Both mean grave or place of death.

These are the words translated to, in english, hell.

The burning part comes from gehenna, which was a real trash pile that burned constantly.

Religious leaders used these terms whilst twisting the meaning to make "hell" scary and thus causing people to follow their teachings to avoid going to a firery hell after death.

What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires -- desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell

Thanks. Putting military and atheist as non compatible positions makes my radar ping.

One version I heard long ago was:

There are no atheists in foxholes and no believers in concentration camps.

Diversity, independence, innovation and imagination are progressive concepts ultimately alien to the conservative mind.

I've heard that too, but Chip this is what wiki says, and they don't add the last part. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheists_in_foxholes

And I would say the second part is just as much a defamation as is the first. I think history shows that a lot of religious people have kept their beliefs in spite of persecution. In that, I respect them. (For keeping their beliefs in spite of reason, I do not respect them.)

Hershman is probably a Dadaist, Trish. See this thread from January.

If you don't get his jokes, then you're one of the people that he's mocking.

I think you nailed it with Dadaism, Dave. So passé. So 20th Century.
