So last Wednesday, in chat, Jerome tried to convince us that the word "effects," in the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, means "essences" and not "personal belongings," and he did this simply by cracking a dictionary and reading the first definition without any regard to the word's context.
I suggest we do this for intentional humor, so pick a word out of an Amendment, and replace it with any dictionary definition or synonym of that word you choose.
For example,Congress shall make no law refraining from intruding upon or interfering with an establishment of religion... Hehehe. That's the exact opposite of what the Framers intended.

I'll see your Constitutional Amendement, and raise you a Commandment:
Surely, this one (Exodus 20:8)...
20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. |
... really means...
Bear in mind the secret day of rendezvous of witches and sorcerers for worshiping the Devil, to save it for inspiring fear. |

Well, I was hoping to get a few more Amendments done before moving on to some other text, so let me add a couple more:Sexual intercourse shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or shortening by omissions while retaining the basic contents of the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for an even adjustment of grievances. Sure, there's a lot more that can be done in just the 1st. But lookie here:A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear the upper limbs of the human body, shall not be infringed. We have the right to not be amputees! |

What a man believes upon grossly insufficient evidence is an index into his desires -- desires of which he himself is often unconscious. If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way. - Bertrand Russell |

I am enjoying this, but this is Equivocation (using the word in a different manner then intended by the author).

So, does the government under the constitution have the right to collect and demand data from citizens without cause? And, if no; what in the original contract prevents them from doing so?

Right, that's what you did in chat the other night. So, does the government under the constitution have the right to collect and demand data from citizens without cause? And, if no; what in the original contract prevents them from doing so? | You might want to start a separate thread about that. Here, we're trying to have some fun. |
