Since we have had so much 9/11 idiocy here lately, here is an MP3 Podcast of a lecture by Lawrence Wright , winner of the 2007 Pullitzer Prize for non-fiction. He describes why people join Al-Qaeda and what Bin Laden was trying to achieve.

Lawrence Wright spent five years researching the history of the events leading to the destruction of the World Trade Center Towers in New York City. His book about the subject, The Looming Tower won the 2007 Lionel Gelber Prize, and the 2007 Pulitzer Prize. In this public lecture, Wright analyses the forces that created Al-Qaeda, and adds to our understanding of what we must do to fight them. |
The good news comes near the end - he argues that Al-Qaeda has made too many enemies to get very far and it's memeber's are more interested in martyrdom than effectiveness.
