Los Angeles (MSP) -- Cardinal Roger Mahony apologized Sunday to the hundreds of people who claim to have been sexually abused by Roman Catholic priests, acknowledging that the Archdiocese of Los Angeles' $660 million settlement will not buy back their childhood, their sweet-faced, innocent childhood.
Cardinal Mahony:
"What you going to do?"
"Maybe it should not have happened, and, legally speaking, it probably should not ever happen again," Cardinal Roger Mahony said Sunday. "But hey, but what you going to do? Boys are boys, priests are priests, and tradition is tradition. Besides, priestly pay is low, so perks like this are important. Are we sorry about any of this? Look, we just now agreed to shell out more than a half-billion bucks to these little prick-teasers, so of course we're sorry to that extent."
"There really is no way to go back and give them the innocence that was taken from them ... The one thing I wish I could give the victims -- and I cannot, my attorneys have warned me -- is an intense session of hugging and warm fondling to make everything all right again," Mahony, who leads the largest U.S. archdiocese, told reporters.
