Three cyclists booted from Ronde van Holland

AMSTERDAM, July 26, 2006 (DNN) -- More than two months after the completion of the Netherlands' premiere annual bicycling event, organizers have announced that they at last remembered to test urine samples from participants.

Those test results have cast a shadow over the future of the bicycle race. The annual road race, like the Tour de France, is divided into separate stages. Unlike the French race, however, the stages are not timed, and are pretty much improvised, often with cyclists wandering off all over Europe, some never being heard from again.

This group of athletes was photographed not smoking
weed at one of the kind-of-mandatory smoke stops.

This year's race, held between May 6 and May 15, was won by "That guy who looks like the Zig-Zag man, I think," said Ronde van Holland President, Jan Vanderlaan. The belated urine tests turned up three athletes whose urine proved entirely negative for tetrahydrocannabinol, LSD and heroin. "This is a dark day for our race," said Vanderlaan. "Next year, we're going to try to remember to test for doping before the race begins."

Dutch bicycling fans were especially upset, as one of those who tested negative was the Netherlands' own top entry, Thomas Maartins.
