According to this article:
School chicken blood ritual lays an egg

08Aug07

A NEW York City school principal accused of performing religious rituals with chicken blood, incense and candles in an attempt to cleanse the school of negative energy will be fired, education authorities said today.

A interesting example of a violation of church/state seperation. But I can't help but wonder what their reaction would have been to, say, a Christian ceremony toward the same end. An exorcism, perhaps.

Anyway, it sounds to me like that school needs all the help it can get.... Maybe they shouldn't have been in such a hurry to fire her.

Well, I'd say it depends on the reason for firing - they say it's because she coerced other staff to participate. I'd also say something about cruelty to animals, but I don't know how that flies in the U.S.

I think the coercion of teachers to pay for the religious ritual was the main reason for the firing. That's why I put that into the title. That's a violation of the teachers' religious freedoms, and also simply a thuggish abuse of power.

(Since there were no students around at the time of the rite, there wasn't an issue of the kids being subjected to religious indoctrination.)

Slaughtering the chicken just added to the general disrepute of the act in many peoples' minds, I'd guess. There may or may not be laws regarding ritual killing of chickens in New York. I know that some Santeria practitioners do get in trouble in some states for killing goats, though.

I just wish I had a tape of the coercion. I have no idea what I would say to try to get someone to help me preform a ritual sacrifice on a chicken. Although, I would imagine puns would be involved.

Why continue? Because we must. Because we have the call. Because it is nobler to fight for rationality without winning than to give up in the face of continued defeats. Because whatever true progress humanity makes is through the rationality of the occasional individual and because any one individual we may win for the cause may do more for humanity than a hundred thousand who hug their superstitions to their breast.
