A interesting example of a violation of church/state seperation. But I can't help but wonder what their reaction would have been to, say, a Christian ceremony toward the same end. An exorcism, perhaps.
Anyway, it sounds to me like that school needs all the help it can get.... Maybe they shouldn't have been in such a hurry to fire her.

Well, I'd say it depends on the reason for firing - they say it's because she coerced other staff to participate. I'd also say something about cruelty to animals, but I don't know how that flies in the U.S. |

| I think the coercion of teachers to pay for the religious ritual was the main reason for the firing. That's why I put that into the title. That's a violation of the teachers' religious freedoms, and also simply a thuggish abuse of power.
(Since there were no students around at the time of the rite, there wasn't an issue of the kids being subjected to religious indoctrination.)
Slaughtering the chicken just added to the general disrepute of the act in many peoples' minds, I'd guess. There may or may not be laws regarding ritual killing of chickens in New York. I know that some Santeria practitioners do get in trouble in some states for killing goats, though.
