Just about everyone knows that many Hollywood stars use fake names professionally. Some of you may even know that Tom Cruise's real birth name was Thomas Cruise Mapother IV. Cher is Cherilyn Sarkisian LaPierre. Carrot Top is Scott Thompson.

But, smart as some of you bastards think you are, I'll bet you didn't know that the use of professional pseudonyms is also rampant in both the skeptical and woo-woo "communities."

I did all the scholarly research for you. Here, learn as you look over this small sampling of my findings:

Richard Dawkins, biologist and atheist. Real name: Ricardo Godlove.

Bill Dembski, Bible school math prof, anti-evolutionist. Real name: Lemuel Nukkelwalker.

James Randi, Stage magician and professional skeptic. Real name: Wally McGullible.

Uri Geller Spoon-bending fraud. Real name: Slick E. Fingers.

Sam Harris, atheist, author, and neuroscientist. Real name: Pius Priestly.

Sylvia Browne, "psychic" fraud and parasite. Real name: Justa Wilde-Gess

Interesting.

This flies in the face of my "They had no choice" theory, which was prompted by the names of several college professors I knew:

Dr. Starfield (Yes - Astronomy) - i.e. He had no choice.
Professor Brewer (Chemistry) - i.e. He had no choice.

James Randi's real name is -- are you ready for this? -- Randall James Hamilton Zwinge. I think I like it better than what he changed it to.

Years ago, I knew a Navy SEAL named Fishback, and Boatswain's Mate named Knotts.

Chip, it looks as though the pattern here is that skeptics rise to overcome their birth names, while woos are slaves to them throughout their lives.

Yeah, Fil, I did know that about Randi's born name. When I did that Chick Tract spoof, I had his and Mary's son named "Randall." Randall James Hamilton Zwinge would have been a fine name to stick with -- except it probably didn't fit on a poster.

In my elementary school, the principal had a paddle prominently displayed on his office wall. We kids were all terrified of being spanked with that thing, though nobody knew of anyone who had it done. When I went into the third grade, my teacher was a Miss Tanner. I was sure she was going to tan my hide, but she turned out to be the most popular and gentle teacher in the school.

When I was a high school student and Naval submarine Reservist, I spent two weeks of one summer aboard the USS Rock (SS-274), an old WWII veteran sub.

There's a dentist around the corner named Dr. Ah Now. He/she should change their name to put a 'Say' in front of it.

And while this isn't a person's name, there's funeral parlour in downtown Toronto called the Wing On Funeral Home. I don't think the Chinese proprietors realize what it seems like in English. No idea what the Chinese name means.

When I was in the Navy in the mid-sixties, I was several times in Hong Kong. In those less ecologically sound days, I bought carved ivory earrings for my mother and sister at the Hang On Ivory Company.
