Bush & Co. have all but formally given up their vaunted hopes of establishing a democracy in Iraq. Nightmarish political realities in Baghdad are prompting American officials to curb their vision for democracy in Iraq. Instead, the officials now say they are willing to settle for a government that functions and can bring security. . . . "Democratic institutions are not necessarily the way ahead in the long-term future," said Brig. Gen. John "Mick" Bednarek, part of Task Force Lightning in Diyala province, one of the war's major battlegrounds. | Meanwhile, an unrelenting media campaign is being waged to undermine American's confidence in Prime Minister al-Maliki.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki. Bush publicly insists he's behind the sitting Prime Minister: "Prime Minister al-Maliki's a good guy -- good man with a difficult job and I support him," Bush said. "And it's not up to the politicians in Washington, D.C., to say whether he will remain in his position." | But I have severe doubts of Bush's sincerity.
Former Iraq interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi has hired a Washington-based GOP lobbying firm with close ties to the White House to press his case in the US.
Former Prime Minister Allawi.
Iraq's former interim prime minister accused Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki of fomenting sectarian violence plaguing the war-ravaged nation.
Ayad Allawi said Sunday he will soon return to Baghdad to "reverse the course in Iraq.
Speaking from Amman, Jordan, Allawi told "Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer," that al-Maliki leads a government loyal to Iran and Shiite interests. | And why did I start this post with a title referring to Vietnam?
Because sometimes elements of history actually do almost repeat.
In 1963, when Kennedy was President, the direst US involvement in Vietnam was still young. The US supported the first President of the Republic of (South) Vietnam, Ngo Děnh Diem.
Ngo Děnh Diem, with US Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge. Diem was nepotistic, authoritarian, and favored his Catholic faith while oppressing Buddhists. Buddhist monks protested his policies by burning themselves alive.
Buddhist monk self-immolates in protest. In 1963, Kennedy had had enough of Diem. When hearing of a coup plot, the CIA told the plotters that the US would not interfere. The result was that Diem was assassinated after having surrendered to the coup leaders.
Ngo Děnh Diem, shot dead in an APC after surrendering. And according to Wiki: Upon learning of Diem's ouster and death, Ho Chi Minh is reported to have said, "I can scarcely believe the Americans would be so stupid."[56] The North Vietnamese Politburo was more explicit, predicting: "The consequences of the 1 November coup d'état will be contrary to the calculations of the U.S. imperialists ... Diem was one of the strongest individuals resisting the people and Communism. Everything that could be done in an attempt to crush the revolution was carried out by Diem. Diem was one of the most competent lackeys of the U.S. imperialists ... Among the anti-Communists in South Vietnam or exiled in other countries, no one has sufficient political assets and abilities to cause others to obey. Therefore, the lackey administration cannot be stabilized. The coup d'état on 1 November 1963 will not be the last."[57]
After Diem's assassination, South Vietnam was unable to establish a stable government and numerous coups took place during the first several years after his death. | I expect deja vu all over again.
