Dembski's ridiculous blither blog has it's fabrication machine going all ahead flank. The reason for all of the noise would seem to be the discovery (by others than the ID/Creationist non-researchers) of genes in anomenes that are very similiar to some of our own. This frothing has not gone unanswered.

The Anemone genome paper, that I previously had posted on, was a landmark paper in comparative phylogenomics. It provided a 'backbone' (yes, pun intended) for comparison from a supposedly more primitive state to a more derived state (i.e. arthropods, nematodes, mammals). The findings of the paper were very interesting, yet somehow they are being highly misinterpreted by certain factions, namely intelligent design "theorists". At the creationist blog, uncommon descent, there is blatant misinformation being spread about the findings. After reading the post and its comments, it is obvious that the poster and certainly the commenters have not bothered to read the paper. To really understand a scientific article one must move beyond the press releases and read the work as it stands.

As someone who has and currently is studying anemones, I would like to respond to some of the ID claims both from the original post and some of the more 'interesting' comments. I will proceed on a point by point basis:

They do no research; do no studies beyond taking the works of legitimate scientists and spinning them in false directions to support their utterly failed conjectures.

They have some PhDs on staff, like the moonie Wells, but these do the spinning, not the science. They have Michael Behe, who actually has done science, but has been refuted every time he tries to defend ID -- flogged with his own flagella, as it were.

But hey, they're good for a laugh and I hope they continue to play the studious fool.

Thank you. That was a good read.

The ID crowd is so desperate to wave their hands and shout (pretty much their only "research" activity), that if a vampiric woodpecker were discovered in Peru, they would probably holler, "See! That totally disproves Darwinism! Those materialists didn't see that one coming! But we IDers have been predicting this for decades!"

Actually, the present comments in UD are no less silly, dishonest, and irrelevant than my made-up example.

Uncommon Descent:
I need not add (but will anyway, for anyone who needs it spelled out) that Darwinism has NO explanation for where these complex genes came from. How can you have a program to build complex multicellular creatures before there are any such creatures for natural selection to work on?
It seems to be nothing more than a rejection of the idea that an anemone is a "complex multicellular creature," which it certainly is when compared to, say, an ameoba.

BTW, I finally looked up just exactly what Bill Dembski does at his fundy, Southern Baptist bible school. It ain't science he does there, anymore than he does it for the Discovery Institute.

According to the Web site of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, he's a "Research Professor in Philosophy" in their School of Theology. I presume the "research" part means he doesn't have to actually teach. The rest of his title apparently means he doesn't have to do anything else, either. The job's just a sinecure for an multi-incompetent who loves the Babble, but has nice-looking sheepskins.

Such a multi-talented man! Here are his degrees, as listed on the site:
* Ph.D. philosophy University of Illinois at Chicago (1996).
* MDiv. Princeton Theological Seminary (1996).
* M.A. philosophy University of Illinois at Chicago (1993).
* Ph.D. mathematics University of Chicago (1988).
* S.M. mathematics University of Chicago (1985).
* M.S. statistics University of Illinois at Chicago (1983).
* B.A. psychology University of Illinois at Chicago (1981).

Amazing that someone can apparently spend decades studying, come out of it with one bachelor's degree, four masters, and two doctorate, and yet know fuck-all, and be capable of doing fuck-all.
